I use a

www.netgear.com.au/error/404_Error.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/home/products/connected-entertainment/wireless-display-adapters/PTV3000.aspx

works in windows with widi and android with miracast.

windows you can use it as an extended desktop so you can browse and also have the chart plotter on the TV screen. however I just read that navonics is no longer being supported on windows.. so opencpn is what I am using on my windows tablet.

Mate is fitting out a 50 footer, what's the biggest 12V TV people have. His research says 32". He also wants to run the map on the TV but wants see it from the cockpit. Say on autopilot and sitting at the table outside.
comments?

Hi Aquan,
I dont know if this is any good to you, but I am looking at getting some of these in (we carry sunlight resistant displays for commercial clients)
Sunlight readable, IP65 rated, touch screen, 24", 9-36VDC. So you could mount it in the cockpit.
I am toying with a ram mount acting as the hinge bracket to push it into the cockpit through the hatchway.
1000 nits brightness.
Kinda cool to me, but I like standing for hours at the small shiny things wall at the chandlery, so this could be a similar character defect.

Edit: Mmmm...range is bigger than I thought...8",12", 15", 18", 21.5" and 24". Aargh! Decisions!

Here's a good Australian source of fair dinkum (not power hungry 240V AC with a 12V DC input) 12V TV, Radio, antennas, etc.
Got one myself and can recommend them.
NB I have no association with them other than as a customer.

Depends where he mounts it. My 15 inch laptop on the chart table is easy to view from the cockpit. I used a 19 inch on my fishing vessel and could see it from the back deck.

For navigation only I prefer the old 4x3 format. For a combination unit I reckon a 22 inch screen mounted on a pivoting bracket at the chart table would be the go. I measured it and this is the largest that fits there. Their is no substitute for screen real estate when it comes to navigation, fit the largest you can.

Disregard my last post it seems that chrome cast does not mirror your iPad it only mirrors movies selected through google chrome!

my issuie is that these devices are meant to work through a base wifi obviously I don't have this so when I wifi to the device I then need to get my internet through my personal hotspot with my phone!

I think I will go back to the original unit at least this way i can go through my home screens and navoinics!

I don't think it's blue tooth, my iPad ,iPhone and chromecast and printer are all running from wifi! It's now doing my head in!

The chromecast is just a rip so you can download googles movies its a cheap way to undercut the apple TVs, I don't really want to watch movies streaming, I just would like to mirror my iPad To a big screen for navoinics, photos and some utube clips or internet browsing, Can it be this hard gees

Oh and welcome mahlia btw!

at least with the original device which I returned today I could mirror my iPad with the TV its now clear to me that the new chrome cast does not have this option with iPads.

i will re purchase the returned item tomorrow and hook my phone to it using my personal hotspot 15gb from my iPad this way I Can mirror utube music ,navoinics and photos to the big screen!

what are you trying to do?

I presume your trying to connect your ipad to a router or wifi hotspot for the internet and your using the screen cast device over wifi as well. I presume the screen cast device is using its own adhoc wifi network to connect to the ipad and so it cant connect to the router as well which is on a separate wifi network to the screen casting device. you cant connect your ipad to two wifi networks at the same time.

the netgear ptv 3000 I linked in my previous post doesn't have this issue for some reason even though it does create a weird adhoc network.

also the chrome cast would not have that issue as it connects to the router and does not create its own adhoc network. it sits on the same wifi network as the ipad with its own IP address. I thought it could screen cast but maybe that's only on android and windows device.

edit: thats right ipad uses airplay..

I don't know if this is what you bought

Yes I been through the steps! That's interesting the EZcast dongle is the same as the chromecast dongle but it's using the EZcast app the same app as my original device!

i live on a boat.....I do not have landline or wifi . All these devices are meant to be hooked into a landline wifi. Reading on a forum my original device can actually connect to wifi and personal wireless internet apparently!

Hi Southace,
With the google chrome cast, you can mirror the following:
A google chrome page
A application that is open
A whole desktop.

I will screenshot how to do it

HI Southace,

If you have downloaded the chromecast extension for Google Chrome, it should be visible in the top right hand corner of your window (see pic)
Click on it, and it will open a popup box that lists the chromecast devices.
There is a tiny little downwards facing arrow to the right of your chromecast device.
Select that, and you will have three options to mirror.
Select the desktop option.
Voilah!
Hope this helps.

Hi Shaggybaxter, I'm very keen to hear more about "sunlight readable" displays; in my view the holy grail for a display screen on a boat. Can you provide a little bit more info on them - or a web link so I can check up power consumption, ports etc.?

Hi Karsten,
Have a look a the following website, this is the manufacturer that we use. www.litemax.com. Under Products, select Navpixel Marine .

I would like to point out this is not a sales pitch. I don't sell to the public, nor does Litemax. We do major infrastructure projects, but if a Seabreezer needed some help I have no problem seeing what I can do.

The manufacturing process is fascinating, in essence the screen comes as a big sheet and the panels are all cut to size, so it is not like getting a screen from a TV and tweaking it. We do a lot of video related works, so we use these for our clients in applications like transport and mining etc. Typically 1080P resolution on the normal sizes, the 8 inch style of course are not.
I can vouch for the brightness and readability, even in qld.
We haven;t ordered the marine range for AUS yet, but I do see a wholesale market for them, hence my interest. I currenlty am playing with their 17" touch screen version, and so far its really good. Bit of kicking and harsh treatment yet to administer, will keep you posted!
