The judge was Margaret Sivyer - former director of Maitland Art Gallery.
The first prize winner Sue Linton impressed the judge with her excellent work.
" The portrait of Brian English 'Homeward Bound" is a wonderful study, capturing his love of the sea, and showing his journey through life in his face. The character of the man was so well and sincerely portrayed."
Here is what Brian said when I let him know-
'I think that the judge "read" the painting very well. Picking the pleasure of being at sea, plus the well lived-in face. She doesn't know me, as far as I am aware, so she has seen what you put there, not a likeness/photographic image of someone she is familiar with.
It has been a very interesting project to have seen develop. Also a bit amazing that so many people have seen it and appreciated it.'
Sboardcrazy- "As I specialise in portraits it's great to have a judge confirm that my portraits capture the personality / soul of the subject. I've been working away perfecting my art for years with that aim foremost in my mind.
People tell me I capture soul , something intangible thing in my portraits and it's great to have this skill officially recognised in this way!"

Well done you. An excellent portrayal of an old salt coming home from the sea .... love it.
Thanks!![]()
I have just spent a few hours in the NSW Art Gallery and have been thinking about artists capturing the moment. The way this portrait captures his feelings, the confidence he is almost home and the threatening sky is just magic. A quality painting.
No one realises how hard things are until they give it a go themselves. So I see talent way past my own. Very nice sir!

Nice shot! Thanks everyone. Thanks Morning bird!
Now if I had a photo like that to start with!
I used about 7 different photos - one of his face , 1 for his wetgear ( he was actually in a T shirt on the lake when I took the reference photo) another for the sky..etc
I met Brian when he modelled for the portrait group I am a member of. I was looking for a subject for our 2014 exhibition -' A Hunter Person of Note' and once I found out he was a sailor and had just gone around Australia and about to go around Cape horn I thought here is my model!
We were in the process of buying a boat in Pittwater and wanted an extra person on board to help with the sail back to Lake Macquarie. Brian came and crewed and the reference photos were taken on that trip. There were quite a few rain squalls on the day which gave me some good photos to make a great setting for the portrait!
