Hi Had 2 of the guys over on board to sort out my stove, they got it going, but it smells like Kero, we did start it with Metho, but I am thinking that I should be burning Metho, it has a pressure tank, its a Maxie 2 burner with oven ?????????????
PS I have never filled the tank, but it does smell like kero, any suggestions
If it has a pump to pressurize the fuel tank then the stove should be running on Kero!
You do start them with meths, depending on the design.

Hi nsw Sailor, If thats correct then its all good, couldnt understand why start with metho then burn with Kero. I thought it was a metho stove, but smells kero, but it does have a pressure tank that is pressured with a small (bike type pump) ???????????????

I have a kero stove oven on my boat and it works great. I use a bike pump to pressurize it.
Be sure to get the burners well and truly pre heated with the metho before you turn on the kero or it can flare up. Always use metho to light it if you can because you will find it cleaner and less chance of big flare ups. Check to see if the knobs prick the jets in the burners when you turn them full on. This allows you to clean carbon from the jet, If the jets are dirty it wont burn smoothly nor develop full heat.
I pressurize to appox 75kpa and have found that the amount of kero in the tank changes the time the pressure lasts. When using the oven I have found that heat warms the kero tank and starts sort of a self pressurizing effect.
Remember to release the pressure from the tank when you finish so you don't get kero weeping out of the burners.
Its all very similar to a Tilley Lamp.
Never fill a pressure kero tank more than two thirds full with kero, remember you need to leave that ullage for the pressure to sit.

You pressurize, then crack open the selected valve using the knob allowing a small amount of metho flow into the bowl below the jets. Turn off the valv and light the metho in the bowl. Ths heats the metal tube through which the metho flows up to the jets and thereby causing the metho to vaporise. When the flame dies out, ope the valve and light the burner. Viola! An occasional pump with the bike pump keeps the pressure. The bike pump hose screws into a fitting on the stove. So if ths the bicycle pump system to which you refer it may well be a metho stove like mine.

Some owners change the jets for either on any brand of stove
Somewhere on the stove should be a compliance or rating plate which will possibly have a model number on it. In the interests of peace of mind and safety a phone call to Maxco may be in order to confirm one way or the other.

If your burner is the same as in the first photo above, it is a kero stove.
Kero stoves need the burner pre-heated with metho and then run on kero.
Metho stoves also need pre-heating with metho but I have never seen a pressurized metho stove.
Be very careful with what you are doing there. Using metho instead of kero in a kero stove could be very hazardous.

Metho if you put some on your finger and blow on it I think it feels cold where as kero will not feel cold

What I have found out, after many phone call to Maxie, who have changed hands many times, on the rear of the unit, had KMO, have been advised by Coy, that K= Kero M= Metho and the O does not know, so I am now happy that you start it with Metho and switch to Kero the burn

In the right circumstances they are both explosive, but the major difference is that kerro has a higher flashpoint ie. you need to preheat the burners in order to vapourise the kerro.
I have a lot of experience with both. Have to say kero is far better for cooking and lighting.
But kero stinks, kero cooking and lantern are excellent alternative, ...outdoor....
would not use any in enclosed area.
Metho is compromise, acceptable smell but marginal performance.
I am using little portable camping single burner with cheap gas refill cartridges , happy for any
type of cooking.
I always used gas on boats, small bottles ... big bottles.
Open gas bottle, cook, close bottle when flame was still on.
That means no gas in pipes.
Ones in a while, check for leaks, as simple as brush on , all critical joint and bottle neck
when gas was in..... kitchen washing detergent.
Not sure how does it comply, but cooking and baking on gas is just unbeatable.
after rebuild on old metho nothing reconditioned dismantled and cleaned one burner work spot on the other was a problem . I had a friend who own the same stove. He had a pplay with mine and probally a replacement burner would have done but after I saw thew way it flared up . I stopped. in the back f my mind I wanted a oven and griller but thats my choice is not gas so i went kero . As a child on a farm the kero lamps were plentiful
its ready for physical fitting but wont be ready to light till next year some time to many other projects going right now
