I have the opportunity to purchase a marinised Kubota D722-E 18Hp motor with a genuine 131 hours on it quite cheaply. It has come off a Seawasp generator, the generator died prematurely and the motor has been sitting in a shed unused for quite a while (photo below). Do you think it would be worthwhile considering it as a replacement motor for my Carter 33?It currently has a Yanmar 3GM30 27hp that runs quite well but you never know with old motors. Looking at the calculations online, a boat like mine with a guesstimated waterline of 28 ft and and a displacement of 4.5t it should ideally have a 20 hp, so the Kubota is slightly undersized and the Yanmar a bit generous. Also what are the logistics of modifying mounts and matching with a new transmission?
Any recommendations greatly appreciated.
If your current engine is working I wouldn't go to the effort to install a used engine, labour will be high + you need gearbox and panel etc

and possible alignment problems with a different motor gear box combo.
How many turns on the starter does your old motor take before it starts?
is your a sail drive or a gearbox on the back of the Yamnar
That Seawasp is a particularly good marinisation. It has done 131 hours at 1500rpm, they are governed at that. My 3 cylinder Seawasp did 17,000 hours before I sold the vessel and had an occasional drop of oil from the rear seal and would have lasted a lot longer. If it was really cheap it might be worth sticking in the shed but you might get another 20 years out of the Yanmar too! The Kubota will need a few mods and an alternator if it's the one with a generator. Nothing serious and there are plenty of parts about. I would look after the Yanmar.
Thanks for your advice everyone, I agree it is not worth the effort when I already have a good motor that is easy to start uses little oil and now that I have moved the giant compressor from the engine bay can work on the the port side of the engine and fuel tank with ease. I don't really want another machine to store so I won't bother with it. If anyone else is interested in it I can help with facilitating the sale.
