The boat next to me had it's furling Headsail flapping around in the wind in yesterdays storm on Lake Macquarie. Which we got caught in!! The storm that is.
I went out this morning to tidy up my boat and decided to go onto his and secure the sail. It had already had the UH strip shredded off.
Is this Ok to do, or should I just leave it and report to Maritime if something like this happens again?
Me personally, I would appreciate that. But thats just me.
I think if I saw something that was going to cause further damage I would do the same. But I would make my actions as clear as I can to any onlookers and possibly even leave a note.

If it were me I would thank you but people can be wierd. Some people would make it an excuse to launch a law suit against you.
Where l moor (for free) here in Japan, everyone has the phone number, key and relationship for the vessels on either side. It expected that if you notice something amiss you will fix it and let the owner know. The payment is usually a nice bottle of sake.
The moral is, get to know your neighbors.

Someone secured my boom once. I was very great-full to whoever did it.
Its not a bad idea to have your phone number somewhere visible, eg. near the companion way, so that other yachties can call you if there's a problem.

What a simple and great idea!
I do it regularly. I run a facebook page for the local yachts and what this has done is made people pro active in looking out for each other. The flapping genoa makes a racket and upsets the water front pensioners. If you jump onboard and secure it this takes the heat off the yachties from those people with nothing better than to make waves. Does not matter what time of day or night there always seems to be someone watching!

Valo - if my boat was there I would jump aboard, often do to secure booms, topping lifts, reduce chafe, secure unfurled genoas etc. I always jump on board derelict boats to remove seagull nests before they hatch chicks.
I also have looked on boats that just look wrong and have sometimes found out that someone has stolen something or had some damage done. The owners like you for having a check. The one time I didn;t a mate's boat was open and he wasn't around, I later found out some scum had looted his boat and the washboards werent in for the next rain storm. So have a gander and fix it up - gently and carefully, then find out who owns the boat and let them know.
If it is especially bad, like a flogging genoa, I ring Waterways and have a chat and leave my number. I would hate it if someone went past my boat and didn't tidy it up. You would have to be a mongrel to try to sue someone for doing the right thing.
I have jumped on board people's boats and let out more anchor rode when they dragging unmanned. Do unto others and ignore the bastards who make us worried about doing what we know to be right.
