I protect my rubbing strips with 25mm x 3mm stainless steel (grade 304) screwed directly to the painted surface with no bedding compound. Having removed them for some painting maintenance I find some minor crevice corrosion where the screws press the stainless steel against the timber. That's pretty much normal since there would be little or no oxygen getting to those bits. All other sections have no corrosion.
I'm considering painting the inside surface of the stainless steel with some fish oil, wait for it to dry and then re assemble, hoping that may prevent further corrosion. Has anyone tried this with success or some other method?
(I don't want to use a flexible bedding compound like Fixtech or Sikaflex since I'd guess that would totally seal the metal against oxygen and thus promote the crevice corrosion rather than prevent it. I'm happy to be convinced otherwise if I'm mistaken in this belief.)
No experience with dried fish oil, but you might also consider using either a coat of Penetrol, or a steel etch primer which should stick really well (there's a nice product from Norglass called "Norust").
