Handicapping a Custom Yacht

How do the handicappers decide on a custom boat?
I was looking at this.

they usually take an educated punt first up , then work it out after about 5 races

Depends on the handicap system, measurement or performance.

Measurement systems like IRC and AMS would require the boat the be weighed and measured.

Performance, well the boat probably has one from her old club that you could obtain to base a new one off.

A few funny things on that boat....huuuuuge headsails :( Also very large panel (distance between spreaders) between the bottom spreader and the deck. This would mean the rig is suseptable to over bending from vang loads.

Most clubs, you need to establish an arbitrary handicap no matter what type of boat. Usually 3 racers.

I am going to look at this boat on Saturday.
