Okay, not Bass Strait capable, but as a stepping stone essentially to get back on the water and cruise the Qld coast.

Found one unbelievably cheap just down the road. Had a look this morning and, for the price, I can't fault it.
Thoughts?
Experiences?

Crewed on one in wa
Pointed well. With a good turn of speed compaired to the current 34ft 15yr old production yacht I'm on. 6kn around 30 degrees off the wind in 15kn was typical from memory. 8.5kn down wind with a kite.

Liked the feel of a tiller over a wheel. Travler adjustment made noticable changes.

Didn't mind 20kn and a bit of coastal work but We did have some extra lead on the keel due to frequent >20kn conditions. We could point higher than a swing keel version we raced against and faster on all points of sail above 10kn of wind.

All comes down to the condition I supose.

A cousin (Noelex 30, basically the same hull) has done a Hobart and got across Bass Strait OK. I've had some experience with one. There were some problematic build issues with it initially but overall, for cruising Queensland it would be a very useful boat.

You could probably put a self tacker or short-overlap headsail on it which would make it very easy to sail. The Noelex originally just had a self tacker and it was still extremely fast for its day.

bit of a polar opposite to the previous one but a very good coastal cruiser club racer type they usually go a fair bit cheaper than the nolex

The one advantage of the lift keel versions of this and the Noelex 30 cousin is the ability to go into shallower anchorages and possibly store in a yard or trailer. Light construction helps.

The drop keel version is just another keel boat.

I'm not sure. I didn't see a name on it. It's at Newport Marina.

Has a blue section at the bow.

Trumper was in the club at Redcliffe for a number of years and last I knew it went to North Queensland.it went reasonably well, though a little tender. They make a great little club and bay boat that sail well and are a pleasure to sail. Probably rigged a bit light for long distance cruising.

Just learned the boat's name is Farr Out.
Thinking of renaming it to Jar Jar

Great boat. She has been an active competitor on MB in Newport YC races ( esp. wags) with very good results . Why change the name ?
I reckon you'll love her .

She's listed as an illingworth for the race.
I remember that for the 1980 or 81 MH the Farr 925 vitamin C did not meet the safety requirements but did for the SH. The Owner was pretty pissed.
She was an absolute flyer.

The Illingworth Division was for all older boats, of any design.

A quick flick through my copy of the 1987 Sydney-Hobart programme shows that Affair was a 9.8m Curran design that the owner started building in 1975 as a cruiser-racer. One Noelex 30 has done the race, as has one or two of the 30ft Farr 920 1/2 tonners ( The Liquidator and perhaps one other) but no Binks 30s.

Was that you theselkie, racing around Peel Island on Saturday?
If anything like the Noelex 30 sistership, she should be huge fun and very responsive to trim and tuning input.
Very rewarding amount of feedback at the helm.
Well done!

Hey Sailmark

Not me, probably Volition doing the Big Lap race. Photographer 'Surf Sail Kite' posted some lovely photos on FB.

Haven't sailed in over a year so, once I rediscover some self-confidence, I'd like to do WAGS, SAGS and club racing out of Scarborough, north of Brisbane.

Not fabulous, but a photo from this arv.

It will be good to see you out there. Remember the best way to gain confidence is to just get out there and social race. Everyone is out there to help. Unfortunately we will not be out there for the next 6 weeks as we are heading over to the Med to sail on a clipper ship. Are you going to sail with NCYC or MBBC? Both are great clubs, but NCYC probably sail the better courses for you.

Hi Jode5

Thanks for the encouragement.

Not sure which club I'll join. I don't want to be constrained to the D Bay triangle forever and anon, so maybe MBBC?

The cat and I are moving aboard, with the girls staying over whenever they feel like, so the boat will be somewhat heavier than now.

Hope you and Mrs Jode have a fantastic trip

Here is an original ad for Farr yachts (1982) including the B30 back then a B30 could enter the SH but not the MH.

Hey Bananabender

Nice bit of history there .

Even though the B30s were allowed to do the S2H, I wonder whether any actually did?

I'm planning to relocate to Tasmania one day but I'm not sure whether I'll be sailing this boat there. Displacement is 2205kg with only 587kg ballast. A bit light on??

Early days yet... See how she handles Queensland waters
So far, I love her. She is to be renamed The Fat Mermaid... I certainly know how to laugh at myself

I'm jealous .
28% You will adjust. Just means more meat on the rail ,trimming . My little Sonata I sail solo has a B/D of 24.9 % and can be fun. God I wish I was heavier sometimes.
The Nolex (farr940 ) is 31% so not much diff.
Might see you out there .
