Well I've been in Woodwark Bay, 6 nm north of Airlie Beach, since last Wednesday sheltering from the high winds
we are experiencing on the Queensland coast at present. We will probably leave here on Thursday, BUT.
I am now doing the initial planning for taking shelter next week to avoid a CYCLONE !!!!!! ![]()
BOM today was saying a 20 to 50% chance of a cyclone developing.
Our plan at this stage is to run for Bowen, some 25 nm away during Thursday/Friday if necessary.
There I will take up one of the pile moorings for the duration.
It has been a fine day here but the winds are still around the 20 knot plus mark.
You probably aware of the publicationos but if you are not, here they are, downloadable free on the net!
Mariners Weather Handbook
Surviving The Storm
both from setsail.com on forecasting and surviving adverse weather.
It might help you prepare for the worst.
Fair winds! ![]()
The report I read was that even if it did become a cyclone it wasn't at all likely to reach Australia. A beat up headline methinks. Keep an eye on further reports.
I seen this pic this morning and I would personally not be worring about it and would be staying right in the area you currently are !
It became apparent to me about 24 hours after putting up this post that BOM had cried 'Wolf" again.
Over the last three months of cruising I have found that the BOM forecasts can sometimes be so far out as to be unbelievable.
Anyway I'm back in Airlie Beach doing the fuel, food and water thing before going out to the islands again on Sunday.![]()
