Long time lurker, first time poster.
I have made my way to the top of the Terranora inlet priority list and have been offered a mooring. While I was on the waitlist I sold my Roberts 25 and am now looking for another vessel. I have a budget of 20k with mooring laid ($2.8k for the mooring). I would like some advice regarding whether the compass 28 fitted with a Yanmar 8 HP would underpowered to make the passage from Sydney to Tweed and whether the Joubert Pelican with an 8 HP would be jnderpowundeto deal with the wide bay bar. Or! Does anyone have a compass 28, Adams 28 etc etc for sale in the Brisbane area?

I would suggest with that budget that you really take your time selecting a boat. There are heaps of really good boats about in that price range. I would suggest buying a boat that does not have a Yanmar 8 YSM!

This will most likely require a rebuild of the Bukh but gives some idea what is about. You probably should have bought that SS30 of eBay a couple of days ago! Take your time and talk to a few people. Bludge a ride with some of the forum people.
Thanks romona, yep kicking myself about that s&s. Time is of the essence with the mooring licence unfortunately, I should have just taken the risk.
A lot of Compasses have been repowered - ours has Volvo Penta 20HP. Something around 13/14HP is ideal. The main motor considerations are reliability, suitability, ease of servicing and price/availability of spare parts.
Whilst not particularly spruiking VP, it does seem that every harbour has a VP engineer who also carries parts.

+1 regarding the 8hp motor. My Compass 28 has a 13hp Yanmar 2GM, but I can comment on how 8hp feels, because it was originally overpropped and could only rev to about 2100rpm before smoking like crazy. At those revs it develops abut 8hp (per the manual). So I can tell you that coastal sailing in a C28 with 8hp is a miserable experience: I once took several very uncomfortable hours to get around Wilsons Prom with the poor motor struggling against wind and swell and barely getting along at 2-3 knots. With the new prop, in similar uncomfortable conditions I can flog it up to 3000rpm and make over 5 knots.
But your budget should cover a very decent boat that has been repowered.

If you have the $20K budget, you may want to look at the Compass 29, which has a bit more internal room and also has the 15 HP yanmar as standard. there are a few on sale for around that $20K mark. The 28 is a great boat, although it may beat the 29 in sailing performance, however the 29's come with some improvements on the 28's design. Amongst some, the shroud plates can be more of an issue on the 28's. The 29's are wheel helm vs tiller, the boom does not protrude into the cocpit much also the traveler got relocated to the coach top by the companionway.
Some say that the 29 is slower or worse to handle, but I find our C29 a very forgiving boat to sail. BEing lazy, mostly we do it with the genoa only and does the 6.5 knots any time when the winds are right.
That Joubert Pelican is a nice looking little boat. I have never seen one but it will easily out sail any Compass. If I was in the Brisbane area I would be taking a look at Blue Poles. It's the almost flush decked version Duncanson 34. Looks a little tatty in the photos but is certainly interesting! I think the Mutiny is one of the better 28 footers about. Roomy, good looking and a fin keel.
My Yanmar GM10 is really too small for my Tophat 25. Just OK for forwards, but hopeless going astern.
Thanks for you input everyone. Romano, that dunc is really not my cup of tea, but there is an S&S 30 up here I'll be keen to look at.
I have also.looked at a C29 recently, so I may proceed to an offer on that vessel.

Settled on the Compass 29 with a recent 17hp Kubota, pick it up on Saturday. I am certainly up for a new rig in the not too distant future, and I will do the thru hulls at the same time for my peace of mind. Look forward to seeing you all out on the water!

Congrats, where will be your home port?
you will learn that the Compass (if it is original still) uses bronze thru hulls and there should be no need to change them. You may want to give it a clean, but those thru hulls should last forever (well, should not be affected by seawater I mean). I had the same worries about the thru hulls.

get it checked though just to be certain, but you shouldhave no issues, since many compasses still going strong with original thru hulls.
there is plenty to explore around GC as well, join the compass group, heaps of inf there too. Good winds!
