So what happens to the locals who should have first dibs on those safe berths?

So the locals that don't support the marina by
not having birth should have first dibs? Is that what you're saying?

I'm just surprised that there is that much spare capacity when a cyclone is about to hit. Makes me wonder.

You mean the locals who were such dickheads a few years back that never sought refuge from a cyclone and now we have more exclusions on our policies.

Unless things have changed most of Australian and NZ are in the one reinsurance pool.

If you look closely, on many policies there is now an exclusion of cover if the boat being left on a mooring or anchored north of Yeppoon from October the March.

But hey a least they gave us a few episodes of Aussie Salvage Masters.

Yet Noel Patricks book had a whole section on cyclone refuges from at least Fraser to the Whitsundays.

There is also a good YouTube video from some newbies (on their own admission) on a bowman 47 that shelter in a refuge with some old time locals during same cyclone, worth a watch especially after they come out and see the wrecks everywhere including people thay know.

good refuge or overcrowded marina??

During the Newcastle stop over hosted by NCYC a heap of local boats were moved to elsewhere in marina to allow the clippers in close to club amimities so prob the norm.
Re where they are lined up at Coral Sea Marine its usually full of fuel guzzling mega yachts that come and go.

Id think Port of Airlie would be better protected in a blow from any direction where Coral Sea cops wind and waves from a wide range from NE direction
