it's amazing to think she went all over the world. And to lord Howe. Though they missed it and sailed back without landfall. Syd to Perth. Perth to Madagascar. Durban. Carribean, North Carolina, cocos islands. Tahiti. Nz. Back to oz.

Very interesting story. I always love finding boats with interesting pasts. I found a Top hat in Brisbane the last time I was down. Anchored in Lucas Passage between Macleay and Lamb island was a mark 3. Had a peer inside trying not to look too sus. Didn't appear to have a name. Caprice is a mark 1 but the mark 3 looked big Enough for 1 maybe 2 certainly not 2 adults 2 kids. I think very brave move for the Mitchell family, they would have experienced things other family's will never get to experience. Hats off to them.

PS I had a look again at your gumtree ad. Your boat is set up like a brick sh!thouse mate. 6.5mm stays and twin spreaders. I reckon you could roll 360 degrees and come back unscathed.

I'm worried if I go bigger I'll regret it. Trade off... Bigger is more livable but a top hat can go places big boats cannot. Dunno... It's a hard one.

I think it would but could be catastrophic too. I met older sailors who went back to hanks after too many issues with furlers.
A furler and a stay would be ideal perhaps. I'm still not convinced and wonder if I'd want to go back to hanks as my new boat will have a furler. The system I have now enables me to not go forward at all to raise and lower my jib and it can't fail because it's as simple as it can be.

Fair call. This is how it works for me " Jesse Martin has furler, Jessica Watson has furler, other long distance sailor has furler. (Jump on internet googling how a furler works) find out it looks very easy. Then suddenly I think furlers are the best thing since sliced bread.

But they do jam and when this happens its usually in a lot of wind. They unfurl and can cannot be taken down easily. It happens. They would have to be serviced and maintained. Your life would depend on it. Most people use furlers. I'm yet to use one. Barely anyone uses them racing (the class I was racing in anyway sasc)
Many world cruisers don't use them as they are yet another superfluous item among many.
I shouldn't commenting on them having no experience with them. Certainly would save room down below!
