I'm in Vancouver on a holiday and am really taken with the sailing here. Huge bodies of water sheltered by Vancouver Island, excellent scenery and Canadians are top people.
Yes the water is cold, apparently getting to a max of 15degC in August, and winter would be nasty but right now sailors are out and about cruising to coastal villages with snow capped mountains for scenery.
Welcome to the west coast of Canada MorningBird. This is the only place in a cold country where you can sail year round. In fact, if you really enjoy actual sailing, as opposed to cruising, then the winter is the best time to guarantee good winds. This weekend, the largest and most important sailing race on the entire west coast of North America is happening in Victoria, If you have a chance, you should come over to Victoria and see what paradise truly looks like.

Thank you for the invite. We are embarking tomorrow for an Alaska cruise and then driving across Canada to Toronto so not this time.

If you can get hold of Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer you will have a great read connected with Alaska.

I should have mentioned we spent 3 days on the island with a night in Victoria. Would have liked more but life is short. We really like Vancouver and BC.
