Hello Seabreezers,

The toe rail fasteners on my C29 have come adrift in a couple of locations and the previous owner has screwed it back in with stainless self tappers. I'm thinking that this is not an appropriate fastener selection and would like to replace them with an appropriate monel rivet asap before too much electrolysis.

Does anyone know what the original fixing arrangement was for the C29 toe rail? I can see the original fasteners were Al rivets, were they fixed to an Al angle set in the glass or just the glass? Does anyone know the length of the originals by any chance? I have attempted to ask the compass owners group forum, but the moderator is away currently and the question hasn't been posted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Jason

I am in the same position as you're with mine. But adressing it is a major excercise. If you use a thin film of silicone, or even better, you can get some non metal washers, it should be fine. As far as I know, at least on mine, there was nothing riveted. It is the bog that holds the two parts together and the toerail keeps it together with screws into the fiberglass. On mine the effect of electrolysis is visible at the pull and pushpits. But you are talking about 40 years worth of it.

Thanks seebreezy, ok looks like a job for the hard next year, it will give me something to do while the hull dries out.

+1 Get the correct info, not something from someone that really has no idea.

As I said in the original post I have put the question to the compass owners group, but the moderator is away the moment. Once he allows me to post q, I'm sure I'll get some feedback from them.
