Hi There fellow yachties. Looking for some options to improve my basic handling skills under motor. Would be nice not break my boat in the learning process. I have Roberts 27' currently moored in Woodford bay and would be happy to either renumerate someone for their time or alternatively combine with sailing time on the harbour as well. I live in Canberra so usually get up to Sydney late morning and spend all day on board and sometimes stay over night.
cheers

About the only issue to get the hang of is prop walk, the direction the stern goes in ahead or astern when you apply throttle.

Use your mooring as a target, or go around to Tambourine Bay and use the rowing club jetty when they aren't there. Put out a few fenders and you shouldn't come to any harm.

I could give you a hand but I have a few things on for the next few weeks. PM me and we might be able to arrange something. I am on the south side of the harbour, you could pick me up on the way to Woodford Bay and, if your mast is short enough, drop me back near my place where I can walk home. Can you fit under Iron Cove Bridge?

Thanks for the offer morningbird.
Have had another reply as well so will let you know how that works out.
Seems like we have some backgound which is in common.
I joined the navy in 1973. Did Leeuwin then a trade as an ETS

I joined in mid 1972 as a birdie. Spent most of my sea time flying Trackers off MELBOURNE and then after the fixed wing went a deployment up top with a helo on FFG SYDNEY in 84. I plaid off in 1998.
I originally tried to join as a MOBI but my parents insisted I finish school first. They were probably right.

1969 I was the seamanship and boating instructor in the seamanship school at Leeuwin. Perhaps you should have paid more attention in class and on the river!

Yesterday I was giving some advice to the ex pussers bloke who bought the Swanson 32 on how to avoid the sandbars when he leaves this morning. He had a mate with him and he asked about Mobi which is parked next door. Turns out he was never in the navy but his father was the CO of Nirimba before Mobi was built! I'm heading off sailing in a few minutes and I'm hoping not to see them resting on a bar!

Hi Ramona, I also gave him a run down on how to get out of the river when I did the handover. I detailed the channel position and the leads so he should be fine.

I didn't take notes! They were not to be seen when I crossed the bar so they must have been off JB. Good current running South and a good NE wind so it should be a good trip.

Their eyes seemed to glaze over so I told them to wait off the main boat ramp and watch where all the marlin fishermen were going and follow them!

May have been too busy with my academic instruction back then.
