Hi tigers,

a good friend of mine is looking for a solid boat to live on and sail for next three years. We looked at S$S 49 but it's too much work to do on it (including engine). What is the Australian build boat that equals to serial made boats such as Swedish Yachts, Najav, Russy etc. 150-200k budget.
Thank you

Is Spindrift not big enough?

I would go for comfort.

It's not Australian built but that has little to do with quality. I would be looking at New Zealand boats as well. They tend to be world leaders in yachting.

I was looking at this one last week, thought it ticks a lot of boxes.

Respected designer and classic (comfortable) design - tick
Moderate displacement - tick
Aluminium hull - tick
Encapsulated keel - tick
Skeg hung rudder - tick
not to old (20 years) - tick
Good quality Cutter rig - tick
Shallow draft - tick
Big tankage - tick
Substantial ground tackle and well equipped - tick

not sure about the electric antifoul system, I would need to understand how that works, putting an electric current through a aluminium hull sounds a bit scary

I like the raised nav station, you could keep watch very dry and warm

anyway

I would have been very interested in her a few years ago when I was in the market

edit- oops just realised she is already sold

looks nice and shiny... but I agree with your friend, a few ocean crossings later and she would sound like a creaky old wooden floor

think about crossing Australia on rough dirt roads in a city car, doable but the car will suffer and probably never be the same again

Does your friend need a "Bluewater Boat" to go coastal cruising, I think to cruise around Aus the above would be great

I have friends who just completed an Atlantic crossing last week in their Elan 44, they had this to deal with in the Canary Islands before crossing, from their FB page

Serb what are you talking about? Spindrift on the slips - has cruised the Pacific. Do you mean too deep? If so also incorrect.

Maybe the prop /size ratio is not to his liking

What, you really trying to flog that in the quoted price range???
Only a hostie/used house salesperson would give that a go.
