Boat came with a manual bilge pump in cockpit which didnt work. I ended up installing an electric one which i hooked it up to existing manual hose (I'm guessing it's not the proper way but got me out of trouble for a couple of weeks) now it doesn't pump water out anymore. Why.?
Should i hook up a separate hose for the electric pump? Can i join it to manual hose just before through hull fittings or do i have to put another hole in my boat for it
Any other better ideas will be appreciated
Cheers

I can't see why it won't pump through the existing outlet as long as the pump will lift the water to the
required height. You're not trying to pump through the manual pump are you ?. Better check the pump
is still operating OK.

You should have and electric pump that can be switched to on or auto controlled by a float switch.

You should also have a manual bilge pump. I think that is required for any racing category.

Both discharge lines, if they are the same diameter, could go to a Y piece and then to the skin fitting. The thing to watch though is that the positive displacement manual pump discharge does not pump back down the electric centrifical pump discharge line.

I am assuming that your bilge pump discharge skin fitting is above the water line when not heeled at least. I have seperate skin fittings for each of my pumps, above the waterline and coming out of the transom.

The old Daydream yachts had a "self sinking feature" when rain filled the cockpit. You don't want anything like that.

My boat has three bilge pumps.
One is operated from the cockpit, 1 1/2" hose, has its own pick up with strainer from the bilge. (second photo)

The second is a Rule 1600 12 volt, with float switch and 1" hose and it is pumping via the second manual pump.
The third one is a manual one operated from the electric pump's pick up. It works as a redundancy pump in case the electric part has carked. (third photo)

They all drain via one of the twin scupper outlets from the cockpit which are 3 1/2"+ diameter pipes just above the water line on the transom so there are no skin fittings to cause problems. (first and fourth photos)

Few days ago l just flooded my bilge to clean it and run the pumps, they work like a dream.

In the above, to stop inundation below by a filled cockpit, each bilge pump hose has a non return valve.

Thanks for the pics sirg. You wouldn't believe it but the manual pump started working today
I will get a separate hose for the electric one next week so it doesn't run through the manual pump and a T piece just before the through hull fittings so i don't have to put another hole in my boat

I have a manual bilge pump, operated from the cockpit.
I have an electric bilge pump operated from below.
For racing, I had to fit a third manual pump that operated from below, as the electric one does not constitute as a backup.
To be compliant to Cat 2, we did have to fit a new through hull when we installed the new manual pump.

Jeez shaggy!! Three bilge pumps required for a yacht that has no bilge. Seems excessive.
