Hello all,

We are planning to cross the strait sometime feb/march. Obviously we'd love a good weather window. Our planned route is direct Eden to Coles Bay rather than the islands.

Apart from BOM, what are your preferred weather forecast sources. We want to start watching the situation now to get a feel. Obviously, we then plan to stop at Eden until a good window opens up.

Any local knowledge weather tips also gratefully received.

Cheers from sunny Crowdy Head.

HI Bristle

We did a fair bit of asking before our cruise to Tassie this summer. Basically we waited for the high pressure system to move over Eden and then crossed as it moved East. We motored from Eden, early in the day, into very light southerlies, then the breeze shifted East and we motor sailed. I couldn't pay a course for Wineglass so we headed west a tad to get the sails to assist. By about midday we were sailing on course as the East breeze filled in. We had a great sail overnight and were off Flinders by morning.
Meteye was spot on for the whole trip to St Helens where we crossed the bar. We also uses Windy tv and Predict wind which uses 4 models. We went when all the models agreed and we had at least a day of benign weather after we should have arrived. So watch for lazy highs and get fueled up for the first part. Franklin Marine has a good article on the crossing. Do a search for it.
Cheers Phil
