Hi all,

A quick question, I am planning a trip up to Tangalooma Wrecks next week and looking at anchoring overnight on the Wednesday. Winds look like E in the evening and swinging around to light NNW around 6 kts about midnight. I have never anchored here before and have ready it's a bit rough on a westerly over 10kts and i am curious of any experience anyone may have had on a NW overnight. I hoping it will be ok as the wind is light but....... Also i'm on a 29ft mono. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve,

I have anchored there in light NE, no problems mate. Nice place to visit, great for a snorkel around the wrecks.
cheers Richard

Give it a miss as overnight anchorage
bit further south is Lucinda bay
better holding and less roll
also much prettier

Hi Steve i find if you tuck right up between the wrecks and beach you get a bit of protection from the wrecks
When its busy you get a few boats further south and its more exposed

True. Ive never been to tanga but have anchored south in beautiful flat calm conditions however theres no protection down there from wakes made by those big ships. Tangalooma offers shelter from those ships wakes.

It will be the mi cat barge that ruins your experience.
In my experience!
otherwise it's nice, just gets a bit crowded.

Tangalooma is ok when the tides aren't too big, next Wednesday there is about1.5m of run, so should be ok.

If the wind is from the south anchor on the northern end of the wrecks and if the wind is from the north anchor on the southern end. There more space at the southern end but if the wind goes SSW you will roll on a run in tide.

Try to anchor in the mid of the channel so you can swing in both directions.

With low tide at 1830 you will have to enter via the channel to the south of the resort jetty. Check your chart.
If you don't draw over 2m you can come in on the top of the 2.1m tide via the MIcat channel on the northern side of the wrecks. Come in via the southern channel once the tide starts to run out.

Hi Steve,
WE might see you out there, it's WAGS on wednesday.

Out of interest, your forecast has firmed up pretty much as you said,
Light Easterly in the Wed arvo transitioning to
Light Northerly (light) just before midnight then
Light Westerly in the early Thursday am.

Seabird mentioned the low tide is at 1830, this'll help pull you north, but which direction are you coming from?

Hi Shaggybaxter, thanks for the info, and everyone else too. We are coming up from Southport via Canaipa on Tuesday, then looking at Lucinda Bay to anchor on Wednesday but..... the latest wind prediction looks like now getting close to 20kt W late in the evening on Wednesday before dropping off after midnight. Mmmm, could be interesting.....
