So, I've had my anchor chain on for about 11 months. The middle 10m has started to rust wheras the anchor and boat sections (10m) each are fine.
It's the good stuff, not the cheap Chinese type.
Why would this have happened?
It's used regularly. I scrub the mud of as it winds in, rinse it with fresh water in the locker and flake it out and clean and dry carefully every 3 months.
It's not in contact with any incompatible metal at this point and doesnt sit in a pool of salt water.
Would you get it regalved or just replace?

] and I tried to get it regalv'ed but could not find anybody to do it in NSW. I do believe it can be done near Cisco [transport costs ruled that out for me], but it has to be the right process otherwise all you get is a great lump of chain welded together with gal.
I brought a new chain, it was the cheapest option.

Yes nswsailor, there is a galvanizing works in Bundaberg. Trouble is they are like most galvanizing works these days in that they run the pot so hot (i.e. just below vapourising the zinc) that you are lucky to get a 2 micron coating which is like kissing your sister.
The way to keep them honest is to demand the chain or item be weighed before immersion and after extraction and only pay for the weight of zinc deposited.
Cisco, any idea what they charge? May be better just to keep this one going to the lay up around June and buy new on the relaunch in October.

They charge by the weight of the chain but I don't know how much. It is debateable whether it is worth regalving or replacing with new.

As a general rule:
Finish and coating thickness of the zinc has alot to do with the silicon content in the metal. Low silicon usually requires a rough finish cleaning to be able to build a thick coat of zinc.
Higher silicon content metals tend to naturaly coat thicker and finish smooth and shiny
I got my chain and anchors regalvanised in brisbane in 2011 and they are still going strong. From memory it cost about $1000 for a 25, 15kg anchors and 90m of 10mm chain. About 1/3 off replacement cost.
