My next door neighbour in the Creek has two sail boats. One, his keeper, is a 37 ft Cavalier, the other is his original boat
and is a timber 30 ft Griffin and he doesn't know what to do with it. The hull is very sound but it has two decks, one laid atop the
other and the top deck needs stripping off and replacing. The engine is an 18 hp Volvo of unknown useability as it hasn't been
used in ages. He knows money needs to be spent although this may be limited with someone who's handy. What makes
it a bit of a dilemma is the boat has sentimental value to his wife so while he feels he should give the boat away he really
needs to justify a worth to her. On the upside, there may be a mooring involved with the boat if something can be
arranged. I have know idea how to advise him. What do you blokes think ??.
Easy. Your neighbour should simply ask his wife what the selling price, if any, should be and then sell it for that.
I don't think it's quite as simple as that zil. I've an idea the sentimental part is deep seated and very important. I think
to her it's what the boat represents, not what it's worth. Perhaps I should just let him deal with the situation himself
but....I wish I could ease him along a bit.
Timber boat, needs work, probably new engine and rigging, is sadly, probably a giveaway. And the longer he hangs on to it the harder it will be to even give away.
That's how I'm feeling Yara but I didn't want to say it to him although I think he can see that too. Might just
have to let him get on with it. It's sat on it's mooring for a long time now and I think the letter from the RMS
has him worried it might be classed as a mooring minder seeing how one of the stipulations is that the
craft on the mooring is supposed to be able to undertake a voyage.
How about a viking funeral for the vessel? It's the last step to Valhalla for a once proud warrior ![]()

I don't he'll get away with it in the middle of Pittwater Wander.
If he has a bit of carpentry skills (or knows someone).
I have seen old boats broken up and made into furniture, tables benches etc. keeping a lot of the original character.
As a lot of older wooden boats were made of what is now rare timber, they can look great.

Nasty bugger you are.
How about I pour your keg of rum over you and set you alight. Be a waste of rum wouldn't it??
He did tell me what the planking was nods. Queensland Ash I think he said.......does that sound right ?.

If it's the one I'm thinking of in the creek she looks pretty sad. Has a fair sized hole in the coach roof? Looks like a lot of work to me.

If Qld ash (crows ash) sent pics and I can send a truck.
Will not burn well anyway

Yeah, a silver ash quite commonly used in boat building, plywood mfg. Nice straight grain, blonde to yellow colour.
A lot of old boats have significant features that if you can incorporate into a good piece of furniture, you will have a lasting memory. Much better than leaving it to rot away on a mooring.

Made a mistake lyd, its Queensland Beech with a rosewood coach house. It's one of the last timber boats (Griffin Crown) that
the Griffin Bro's made circa 1964. Some attention is being paid to the gunnels as we speak.
Get the wife involved in fixing the boat up so that she fully understands the amount of work needed just to keep its head above water.
She might just decide its best passed on to a new owner and any improvement made to its condition would also make it more attractive to potential buyers.
