I was showing my father in law where our local recycling depot is- and thought that since I hit the jackpot twice in the last month there was no chance of finding another sail.....
boy was I wrong!
spotted a sail bag poking out of the pile of old surfboards and hit the brakes
$10.00 for an as new condition 5.3m Ka KULT windsurfer sail and even the bag is like new,
even has an allen key thingy in the pocket of the bag, dunno what its used for though!
ummmmm...... when are you in perth next Paul?????????
hopefully this works- first time I have tried this
I had to take the photos outside and wasnt sure how good the light would be.
most of the sail looks like monofilm to me, but the bottom panel has reinforcing which looks much like the kevlar? sail we got except this one is like new with no damage or wear and tear at all.
not bad for $10.00!
now I just have to make up my mind if I should try and use it as issued- or just give it to paul to play with![]()
I fly back to work tomorrow- so I have a couple of weeks to think about it yet!
Oh pretty!
I think Im going to have to set my local scrap/recycle/seconds yard owner straight. They never have anything that nice in there. [}:)]
Believe me, they dont always look that good-but lately I have been doing really well.
Out of our last 2 batches from the recycling center, out of a total of 5 sails, 3 looked pretty good to me, and the rest are tatty but good for supplying mast sleeves and patches.
enough to keep Paul sewing and his kids unpicking sails for a while![]()
Wow, good find! I'd have snapped it up too
You could probably flog it off to a windsurfer for $150-200... not a bad little profit margin!
The allen key is to adjust the batten tension -- have a peek in the end of the battens on the leech side, and you'll see a little hex bolt thing in there. It's not always obvious which way tightens, so you need to twist it a couple of times to figure it out.
Although knowing what you guys do to sails I'm sure that adjusting the batten tension is the least of your worries ![]()
Thanks Nebbs!
last time I adjusted battens, I used a belt sander![]()
an allen key operated tensioner is verging on rocket science for me!
After much soul searching,
I have decided that this sail is just too good to cut up and re-sew, if it was a bit shabby, or had signs of wear I wouldnt hesitate in asking Landyacht to convert it for me.
However, I seem to have no trouble finding sails- but not much luck when it comes to finding masts, and we badly need a mast for my sons landyacht which I am about to start building.
so-
Nebbian, (or anyone else out there) if you know of someone who has a spare 2 piece 460 mast in good nick that they would swap for the sail - please let me know!
Thanks everyone![]()
sounds like a plan SN
let the poleys get another season out of it , before it gos back to the salvage yard,![]()
, then make a landyacht sail from it![]()
Swap has been arranged with Windxstacy who has a spare 2 piece 460 fibreglass mast which will solve my mast problems nicely- and update her sailing gear as well![]()
thanks to all those who responded- I will be emailing you back.
well ! what a happy thread
lots of happy campers all getting what they want for xmas.
Go the internet
woo hoo![]()
PAUL!
picked up a GAASTRA eurofoil 5.3 today
luff 455cm
boom 185cm
mast- moderately flexible fiberglass recommended
a little wear on the 2 lower batten pockets where the end of the batten has rubbed- shown in one of the photos, but otherwise in very good condition.
Balcatta recycling depot has quite a few windsurfer boards stacked up if you know of anyone chasing a cheapie for thier kids, or anyone needing a spare board, all sorts of types and sizes, also a couple of moulds for making boards of some type.
They also have a pair of coffins that could make landyacht cockpits
but Anna drew the line at carrying a coffin on the roof of the mazda ![]()
are the red panels greasy or sweaty at all.? that panel if usually some kind of early laminate which sweats over the years.
Otherwise it will be a good recutter, sent one to Lachlan just a day ago![]()
