I recently got my hands on a 2005 6sq M Gaastra remedy windsurf sail and after trying to make it match the masts I have I gave up and decided to recut the luff
To arrive at the curve I needed I set the mast up in the yacht with the boom in place and ran a rope from the mast top
to the end of the boom and another from the mast top to the front of the boom The main sheet and down haul were then tensioned up to simulate the sailing condition
I then measured the mast curve and cut the sail luff to that and
resewed the luff sleeve back on with two rows of zigzag
I am fairly happy with the result I find this sail quite sensitive to minor adjustments of tack position etc
The luff batten end fittings were made from 1.5 mm pvc plastic and formed using a heat gun and then riveted on
with pop rivets with the nail ends punched out and peened over
The original battens were used just shortened to suit
Yet to try it out I estimate the sail is now around 5.6 sq m
Nice work!!
The top area (top 3 battens) Look pretty good.
This is so it can twist off when sheeted out slightly and just weathervane through the gusts.
With your yacht on it's side, if you grab the top batten it should twist up at least 30 degrees with the sheet rope eased of very slightly.
It's a tough one if the mast IMCS doesn't match the sail. For yours it would be IMCS 25 mast. (what is marked on the sail?)
The bottom of the black mast is really curved. Does it have internal reinforcing for the first 800mm or so. At the boom height it seems to be really loaded.
Thanks for the comments guys
Chook you have a keen eye
The top batten especially is floppy and the next ones less so I wondered if it might be too much but decided to sail it first
The stiffener on the black mast is inside the mast 740mm The gold mast stiffener is in about 670mm It was more but I raised the mast a bit as this sail is
longer on the luff The black mast accepts a top section easier so I made a longer one there
The sail is for a 21 ICMS mast I think the two old masts I have are stiffer than that by quite a way The black one seems the softer of the two
I have another mast that is marked 25 ICMS It seems to be similar stiffness to the other two
I could be trying it out soon so fingers crossed
