I have been thinking about making a sail from old tents. Think that they are made of ripstop nylon. They are a pretty common item at the second hand stores here.

Any one ever try this?

I like the idea... Give it a try.

Just remember a few things about land yachts... If they sail at 60-80kmh then the wind speed over that sail is the same / more than that, those sort of wind speeds are regarded as 'Gale force'. Would a tent stand up to that? BUT I do like the idea.

I would suggest doubling over the seams and giving it an extra row of stitching. this is what they do with shade sails here in Oz.
and try to get the directions of the weave lining up with the stresses.
Its been done before ,and successfully ,so go for it

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will give it a try, really beef up the high stress points.

I like the Beaufort scale, nice to be able to quantify the wind to a certain degree. I can see how making observations from your environment can help to predict the wind conditions and the kind of sailing day to anticipate. This is my first wind sport and I am becoming really fascinated by the physics involved. The more you know the faster you Go!
