Ok this may have been raised before, but apart from the official speed record set by green bird, is there any speed record attempts recorded anywhere, something similar to speed week at bonniville. I know were are all into racing and social sailing but what about speed runs ? Maybe have class records for the different classes eg 1,2,3,4,5,5.6 etc.
I have been thinking about this for sometime and was just wondering if it has already been done somewhere.
There probably won't be too many officially recorded speeds around but some unofficial GPS ones of the various classes would be interesting.
I have seen the run and the readout on a beach here of a class5 of 107kph a few years ago

As far as I know there are six people who have gone >=100kph in a Blokart with Standard Blokart Gear.

I did a 110kph on Lake Lefroy salt lake about 5 year ago in my first Lake Lefroy Mini! Each year in September we use our GPS's reset for each day to log our fastest times

So it appears that around 110 kph is the "brick wall" for mini size yachts.
I suspect that class 5 would be a bit higher than that ?
Anyone have any figures ?
I've replaced the 2 star knobs that hold the side braces to the mast base with nylock nuts. A little less drag, must help a little bit.
first thing to considrr with a gps speed is the type of gps. common problem with a unit without a built in battery( eg garmin) is that a bump or shock can cause a off/on effect that causes skips in the track of the GPS . tp1's tarcks are a good example of that . in reality if he did those speeds it would have involved leaving his brain behind as he accelerated, then it overtaking him as he slowed.
the GPS units used by greenbird had built in batteries,and used a doppler system of measuring with areading every second, .I recall garmins giving a 5 second reading.
other ithings to consider is confirmability,ie having a second unit.

I have noticed when travelling at a constant speed in very steady conditions on a cruising yacht that the speed readings are not steady presumably because the speed reading is derived from constantly updated positions over time
A 20 ton yacht speed would not vary as quickly as the GPS indicated
It follows then that a maximum GPS speed reading would be inaccurate for the same reason and would tend to read high ?
Guys keep a watch on these items in this forum. Some good quality data to help you out, even a program to load on a cheep mobile phone that is relatively accurate.

one of the problems landsailors have is that they want to do and see the speeds, but dont seem to want to bother with little things like the maths ,science and verification.
sadly that means that when they do crack worthy speed its unverifiable .
Bryan and bens 108kph on lefroy is a rare example of a situation where we were constantly checking readings and logging consistant improvement in front of witnesses. a better GPS and a second Gps on board was the thing that was lacking. personally i would like to see plots of the runs, just to dispel doubts, although given the conditions on the day I believe them

This is another fun thing I may purchase someday - Sony AS100 camera. It has GPS built in and comes with software to overlay the GPS info
