Ok so here goes,, this is an open invitation to anyone with a blokart, land yacht or any sort of wind powered vehicle to come to kingston on the Australia day long weekend 2016 for some fun in the sun and on the clay,,,,in 2016 australia day falls on a Tuesday so the "event" next year will run from thursday 21st of January 2016 to tuesday 26th January 2016,, as was the case this year, camping is available at the site but it is a bring in take out everything as there are no amenities there,, although if numbers grow toilets might be able to be had in the future, , also sites are available at the local caravan park which is about 12 ks from the sailing site, and i must say its very nice to have a hot shower after a day of tearing up the clay... Further posts will be posted at time goes by and as the date draws closer.. But as i said this is an open invitation for anyone with a wind powered vehicle to come and have some fun
how tricky is it to transfer gear to the beach fom the claypan. do you have to go into town or jump a dune.
what shops are available in town. ben and i are thinking of making a dash over in the van with a 5 and a mini. so a reminder of the amenities would be great we're used to bring all take all
I'll be there.
I have decided to make the trip.
I'll bring just my Patrol with my mini yacht and my kite buggy on the back.
Looking to stay for the whole 10 day kiting event in Kingston, and look forward to meeting you guys sailing on the clay pan.
Leaving shortly after 26th to head back home to West Australia ready for the new school year.
Beach to Claypan is around a 5 min drive, unfortunately there is a considerable pair of dunes and cows between the two to walk it from the claypan. This said, if the claypan was too wet we will ask the landowner if we can set up camp behind the first dune for easier beach access. Not a fan of camping directly on the beach after hearing stories of years past.
Town is a 12 min drive south along the highway. There is an Caravan park, IGA (supermarket), fish and chips, pubs, servo, hardware, fishing/shooting/camping shop, Marine gear, Elders, quite a few tourist shops. Well worth a drive/walk around. Its not a tiny town by any stretch...
I'm a bring all, take all fella too. I'll be camping at the lake as I like to 'rough' it ![]()
We would be wrapped to meet you WA guys!!! At the risk of jinxing it, we have only had a couple of windless days during the last 3 years of week long Kingston SE events...fingers crossed.
Thanks for that information Lachlan!!!
Great to get some idea of what's where..... Also sort out that beer I owe you.
I'm into social sailing/buggying big time, so look forward to meeting you all. I'm self sufficient too, yet to decide where my base will be. Might have a "rece" first.
Good news about the wind too. Fingers crossed eh???
All good Chook you can get rolling in the slightest of breezes with you massive sails.
I booked my annual leave at work and am looking forward to this event.
Hi guys,, just a note, if anyone is thinking of staying at the local caravan park for the Australia day long weekend land sailing bash at kingston, it might be a wise idea to book your site or onsite van or cabin asap as the l local lions club will be holding its annual beach fishing comp over the same weekend, so caravan sites might be at a bit of premium. .

The weekend is open to anyone who wants to come for a few days great sailing
Ill bring my blokart , class 5 and saber, plus there will be some blokarts from our club here in Adelaide
well ben has booked his holidays and hes taking my van so looks like Im up for it too. is the beach sailable for thos of us who can look at a kite and where we are going at the same time?
Yes it is, from blackford drain up past the granites, however there is what they say is Australia's largest beach fishing competition being held on the same beach on the Saturday and Sunday of the the long weekend, this year there were almost 800 competitors strung out along the beach so you can see that space is at a premium along the beach. There will be a group of kite buggy people from Adelaide and Melbourne there over the same weekend and for a week so prior,
I have spoken to the owner of the land surrounding the sailing area at kingston, he is happy for us to be there in January and on into the future, and if anyone wants to camp on the lake bed by all means do so but he asks that everyone please be aware of the fire danger, as they have had some extra growth over the winter months which has not and probably will not be slashed before January, the owner asks no open fires please.
Also i would like to confirm that the local, lion club WILL be holding their beach fishing competition over the same long weekend, from Saturday morning until midday Sunday including over night Saturday night, so anyone thinking about using the beach for kite buggys or sailing beaware that the beach will be lined with fisher people as this is a very popular fishing comp in that region.
Having seen the mass of people and vehicles on the beach for the fishing comp last year, I would say sailing there is not an option while it is on. But as beachball has said, its all over on the Sunday.
all sounds great . Is the lake you sail on called lake Nadzab? . just trying to get my head around the layout of the area
Yes and no, Google earth calls it lake Nadzab incorrectly. Paranki lagoon is the more accurate name. So yes, you're looking in the right spot (it has the causeway running across its southern end, which also serves as our lake access road.
cool looks good. Its seems like the granites is a good access point to get on the beach or is the drain a better spot/. other question of course , what is the prevailing breeze and what kind of time od day does it kick in?
Blackford drain is by far the easiest way to get to the beach, the granites can be a bit tricky if you dont have a 4wd, blackford drain is accessible by any vehicle,, the beach is normally hard packed sand with just a few soft spots down the beach towards the granites, past there it becomes more 4wd territory and the closer to the murray mouth it gets very soft indeed but that's a long way down the beach. I have been going to the South East for a number of years fishing and such so i know the area a bit. Will be doing a bit of a "recy" down there sometime before xmas looking at a couple of other salt lakes near by for ease of access and surface suitability, will post info and a photo or two after i have been down there. Wind is usually blowing by mid morning and mostly ssw I'd say. There is some footage of this year and previous years on the kingston play on the clay fb page, and also on SA blokart club fb page
Just in case anyone missed it, don't forget to check out this years Kingston event forum post for video and images of the location ![]()
Usually quite reliable, I'm guessing daytime ranges in the 15 - 30 kmh (usually). The Blokart guys are often out with 4m sails, sometimes 3 m, the 5 m seems a bit overpowered without a nice flexible mast half the time. My purple/clear sail I was running last year was almost too much to handle 3/4 of the time. The videos from last years event show fairly average weather conditions I think...
Sorry I can't be more specific.
It does vary though so if you have a range of sail sizes I'd be throwing them in
Successfully arranged for time off work for the Aus day weekend. Its official, Kingston SE here I come!
Now just have to get the yachts back together...
Also wanted to ask a favor. I would appreciate it if anyone with video cameras would take them and go nuts taking footage, especially action cam type units. As you all know, I like to put together a video or two documenting the event and would greatly appreciate any footage I can get my hands on. I'll have a laptop at the event to copy video to, or I can arrange to post a USB/DVD after.
Thanks in advance!
You will have footage coming out your ears going on past experiences with the buggy guys.
I have 2 GoPro cameras.
Easter a few years ago.
More than welcome Bill, would very much like to see you there!
If you're not planning to 'rough' it and camp at the lake I would recommend booking a Caravan park site ASAP
