Absolute noob wondering wanting to make a land yacht with $100 tops.
Is there not some cheap buggy I could buy from somewhere and stick a windsurfing boom/sail in it? Something like this?

Would someone go to a boat building forum and ask advice of how to build a boat using 2 packing crates and a pile of disused pallets? Or go to a motor sport forum and have someone ask 'How to convert a ride on mower to a race car'? I would say no.
By asking the best way to build a 'Junk' land yacht devalues the sport that people have spent many years perfecting.
We know it actually doesn't cost any more to build a 'class spec' land yacht than to build a 'junker'.
On many occasions on this forum we have seen junk yachts built with often assistance and praise from many members, the yachts don't perform as expected the builder loses interest, yacht is scrapped.... move on interest lost never to look at the sport again.
The sport will never grow if this continues to be the trend or attitude.
So please if you want to build a yacht do it properly (it won't cost much more), It will work, you won't get injured and most of all you won't waste your $100.
Hey Droopy - where abouts are you?
If you are local-ish to me I can help you with a loaner Lefroy mini

In perth, why can't i find any on gumtree? I thought people would be more interested. I can't even find good DIY tutroials on youtube... What is this sport if there is no DIY tutorial vids? It assumes you are A) a man B) know how to weld C) are willing to learn how to do both A & B respectively... well i just don't have time for that i'm afraid, i'm too busy with fashion design and dance classes. ![]()

I was just trying to make you laugh, but as I can see so many years of passion for this sport and a lot of ego and pride have blinded you to humour entirely... Sorry for your loss mate, RIP ![]()
In perth,
Well....what a coincidence, so am I!!
Paul [AKA "LANDYACHT"] built a ripper little minimini for Mini-Stig some years ago, very basic square tube chassis, recycled wheels on the back and iirc a small bike wheel on the front.
Probably only took a couple of hours to put together.
Our son borrowed it at Lefroy and had a ball doing broggies on the salt lake, even managed to bounce off the side of some ones 4WD without any injuries.
A simple "fun" landyacht, not intended for serious competition wouldn't be too hard to cobble together.
At the moment - the two main venues for landyachting in Perth are probably a bit dampish [Lake Walyungup and Lake Gnangara], but if you have a big carpark or sports ground without too many trees around them [less turbulent air and dead zones] you are ready to roll.
Now - if you would like to borrow a Lefroy mini for a bit of fun - mine badly need some exercise!
As for building watercraft out of pallets and crates - been there done that with W.A. Scouts, @ Lake Joondalup, Lake Gnangara and several Swan-Tiki races.
Racing ride on mowers is pretty good fun too, as long as you avoid the dog poo........

$100 would be pushing it if you're not comfortable building. Wheels are probably going to be your biggest hurdle as they have to resist quite a bit of force/stress. Not wanting to weld is going to restrict you unfortunately. Miniyachts can be cheap but a lot of the cost relies on home building and scrounging materials. At minimum you will likely have to weld a little bit...
BTW the ability to weld and build a landyacht doesn't make anyone a man! ![]()
