Anyone know decent areas for snow kiting in AUS this coming winter - thinking nsw or vic as i need to travel from sydney. Been instructing skiing for over 20 yrs and kiting for 5 so i now need to combine the 2
Let me know
Cheers
Frankie
I'm in a similar position (less the instructing part) and will be living at Hotham again this year, so figured I'd take some gear up. I've seen people kiting out behind the Orchard before, but not regularly. If anyone is keen to have a crack at Hotham this year, drop me a line.
Yes .
have been snowkiting NSW since 97. the top of Karels Thredbo is where I find its the best to start . (Get a kosi express one way tik and walk the rest )
You will find its often nukin or nuthin. This spot works in most wind directions with the predominant wind being westerlies and Nor westers .It can be pretty gusty .As you are looking up towards the ramshead range to the west you will want to head to the left (sw ) to start with following the contour generally this will require a number of upwind tacks .this is the start of the Thredbo to dead horse gap run .After about 500 m you will notice that there is a slope that runs north it has boulders either side and is about 300 m wide .This runs up to the ramshead range which is your goal and there is a large plateau which is very nice .you can keep heading north towards kosi and then follow the ramshead ridge .when on the ridge you will have clear non gusty wind and look out to the vic alps and notice that there is a drop off right down to the murray river in the valley below .it really is an epic area .
Last year i used a 9 m LEI delta kite .the wind was howling 30 -40 kts and then dropping back to 15 kts in the lulls .i doubled up my lines and had the best time ever .the gusts were a little hair raising at first until I settled in and there was a fair bit of really hard snow (which is common when its howling up there )did not woryy me too much and I still had enough in the lulls .Highly recommended including by my mate who was gettin spanked on his 8 m depowereable bridled foil in the gusts and not enough in the lulls and tried my kite ) you will come across spots that have epic windblown snow in the lee of some ridges with perfect wind flowing down them and will hang around them and ski /board the fresh doing circuits .
Have a look in the snowking section as there is a bit of banter there as well .
Will be having the usual 3rd week of Sept hookup for Aussie snowkite diehards at Thredbo again this year .This is my favoirite time as there is generally no line eating cauliflower ice that you can get mid season
Another option is catch the Kosi express up to the top and go along the kosi walk until you cross the creek (about a 15 min walk) .Set up there and tack up that valley that heads out to kosi . When you get to kosi view you can head towards Charlottes pass and kite the snowy valley which is to your right (as you look north towards kosi)(this also heads towards seamans hut ).the wind and snow quality can be very nice in here
Take usual backcountry precautions .
here is a thread on another forum worth a look
