Does anyone know the general sea current direction in the lancelin area and hangover bay.
Just intrigued...
If you lost a board 20m in front of those waves 2/300m north of the first main rock lancelin.. Do you thinK it would end up 2/3km N up the beach? More north of the jetty? Or at the top tip..
Any ideas?

Also is it more than 8m deep just behind those waves?

hey mate
i'm not a regular boaty there, but you generally get a bit of a gyre formation in the WA sand point - island embayment, scenarios. think of it like the wind is pushing the surface water one direction, when it is constrained it has to go somewhere and beacuse the geometry is like a lagoon, the net affect is circular even though they appear fairly open to the sea (the reefs have a blocking affect too even though water can get over the top).
long and short of it for your board, is it could be anywhere, but odds on to be fairly north by now. the problem with the gyre is that if it sent it back out to sea up at the end of the bay at lanno, it might have got shot a ways offshore and when the offshore wind kicked in, further out again. then you rely on the next seabreeze to bring it in, and there are plenty of reefs to mess with it before wedge etc as well. but who knows, could be a good excuse for you to drive through bombing range next saturday as well.
i'd let the local police know your details in case it gets handed in, obviously putting the loss on here as you've done is your best bet for a return. good luck!
fyi, nautical chart shows 8m depths easily around the back there - drops to 12s and 14s pretty consistently just after.
thanks for the reply mazdon![]()
glad i didnt bodydrag for half an hour in eight metres deep at this time of year then ![]()
beachcombing probably a good idea!
thanks again for that info...

Hey Timmy
Have seen windsurf board lost outside South passage (broken mast foot) - we found it ~3 hours later just south of a sandy point 5.5km North of the Lancelin Jetty.
Amazing thing was his rig also floated into the beach hardly marked days later. Would depend on wind, currents and I suppose windsurfer board may float higher/more wind affect better a twin tip (if that is what you lost). Currents would make way more difference.
Know of others twin tip boards lost same location, found and returned a year later - they had phone number on them. Reward was given.
Good luck, definately worth a look.
Thanks for all replies!![]()
Chris... Main launching corner I dont know the name but island in front..people go left waves or right .i went right and theres a small rock... Those ones 150m to the north(right) of that.
I think I am going up tomorrow to beachcomb
Ahh ok, I'd expect the break to push the board inside the reef so I'd suggest looking between the jetty and North point. Most boards come in fairly close. Try Werner at the windsurfing school and the police station, if it's been found they generally get handed to one or the other.
Edit- when did you lose it and what sort of board was it?
chris...airrush twintip about four yrs old with handle blue&white...sunday p.m two days ago.wind stoppedvv gusty kite dropped lucky to get it back up&possibly white sharky=self preservation kicked in=sacrifice board.. am standing watching the great sunset there right now after another go with another board this p.m ... going to take a run to the corner point in the a.m beyond jetty and if not there tackle the point just before wedge island... thanks all for advice .. :-) and kite4fun..thanx![]()
If it's come in it shouldn't be anywhere as far up as Wedge, start at north point and go from there. I've asked a poley mate that lives there but he's not heard of a stray board being found. He will keep an ear out and post on here if it turns up. Good luck.
