posting this as a warning to others....some weeks ago now had belongings taken for my car which was parked on the road next to the main entrance to the pond at safety bay....wrongly thought there would be a degree of safety parking it in full view of everywhere.....not so!!.....suspect i was being watched poss from the carpark just before the yacht club.....old habits die hard because i did the old school trick of hiding the key within the car...got back hours later lucky to still have my car there but valuables missing.............still......i'm not bitter.....i had hell of a session.

Google "surf key lock" and get one of those.

I use "surf key lock" works good. Still I do worry about getting broken into - more for spare kites and gear going missing. Does anyone know of the surf key locks getting broken into? They look pretty F@#$ing hard to break.

Bugger first I've heard of it down here, always so many people around!

I reckon you could get into the surf key locks with the right tools, which is maybe a screwdriver or two and a hammer, but at the end of the day any would-be thief would have to be keen to be carrying such tools.
I have one and tuck it under the car so it would be hard to get a good swing at it. Better than leaving key+bag on the beach anyway.

I think the issue is we are talking about:

- a busy spot, and
- an ordinary break-in would be unlikely, but
- an on-looker could grab a stashed key for an easy loot.

Now if the integrity of the surf lock is that which requires breaking via hammer/screwdriver, well, many cars can be broken into using those tools to jimmy the lock.

Sometimes it's not possible to do this - if you've come from work - have other gear in the car - a stereo that can be easily ripped off - etc. But I learned to do this living in San Francisco where car break-ins are constant. I leave nothing of great value in the car, open the glove box to show there's nothing of value in it, and yes, leave the doors open.

Most of the break-in scumbags are looking for quick and easy pickings... not to boost a car. It's a risk, but has always worked for me. I've come back to my car several times to discover that someone has been having a look around in it. Kinda creepy, but better than paying to replace broken windows all the time.

Just a thought.

Better than a surf lock, just get a waterproof key made up and take it with you. You can get them made up in most shopping mall key shops.
Used one for years on my Ford and just got one made up for a new Commodore, cost $150
Even cheeper is to get just unscrew the key bit from the Fob, leave just the fob in the car, and lock the door with the key part and take this with you.
