Hi,
I'm new to Karratha and new to Kite Surfing! I have had 2 lessons and can fly the kite and take off out of the water, but I am not confident going out on my own! I am wondering if there is anyone in Karratha/Dampier who does paid lessons! I have all my own gear and need some lessons so I can show my father in law up over Xmas time! Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction!
Cheers
Phil

G'day Phil,

I did a bit of kiting in Dampier at the end of 2011 when I was working up there. You have probably noticed some guys out in the bay near the Hampton sports oval kiting on a westerly. That's the only spot I saw anyone kiting and only decent place I could see to launch and land.

It isn't a great learning spot though with the shape of the shoreline there and the rocks. You have to trek out along the beach with your kite towards the causeway to get going and then if you can't hold ground, the westerly will blow you downwind towards all the rocks on the shore. It's usually shallow enough to stand - sometimes only ankle deep on the low tide - well before the rocks to allow you to walk your kite up to the beach through the gap in the rocks and then trek upwind again to have another crack.

So I wouldn't advise kiting there unless you are close to or can hold ground. Prob best to get some lessons in Perth if you're FIFO to Karratha.

Anyway, I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in and give you a heads up. Good luck

Karratha is an awesome place to kite, we re starting to get some easterlies now so hit up Hearsons cove. Dampier is good too on W, but yeah there are rocks along the shoreline on high tide. Other times there's wait deep water. If you're in Karratha lots join up to Karratha Kiteboarders on FB, Campbell runs some lessons too. Wind and flat water all year round, waves on high tide and in cyclones.
