Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if you can kite in the bay at Gnaraloo.
If so, is it suitable for beginners/intermediates? This is my 3rd season of kiting and would normally be at Coronation, so I know the basics and am confident in waves, but am definitely not a pro.
Thanks.
Jo
Hi Jo,
Gnaraloo Bay is offshore and very gusty in a Seabreeze from the Southern side. You may be able to drive (if the gate is open and you have a 4WD), to get around half way round the Bay where it would be a little better, but no one goes around there so you will be totally on your own if you have any issues.
The Bay can be kited in the morning Easterlies, but again with the wind coming off the land, it will be very gusty and the wind dead offshore. I think kiting around the boat ramp (southern side) is frowned upon due to boats and fisherman.
I would tread very cautiously and have a good back up plan if you decide to kite "the Bay" and unless it is small to flat, don't kite the ocean off the bombie or Tombies.
A much better option would be to kite the bay to the Southern side of the King Waves Kill sign just off the camp area. Good spot with some fun waves without consequence (apart from Noahs). Just watch for swimmers in the Northern part of the little bay.
Have fun.

We've been windsurfing and kiting the bay and the point shark alley for years and on the point you get good waves and wind. The wind is offshore at the carpark but is SW at the point and you can get back to the carpark ok with a few taks.
We always have a rescue boat and I wouldn't go out if you haven't got one. The wind in the bay at the car park is really gusty and offshore but don't bother launching anywhere else around the bay as the sandy beach changes to reef about 2km from the carpark.
