Sunday's Paper 8th August 10
Transport Department are looking into banning Kite Boarders from coatal waters ie Metro Beaches.
Where as the council only have jurastiction to the high water mark, the transprt Department have the authority on the water.
This department if it takes advice from the councils could see the ned of kite boarding at a lot of beaches around Perth.
Guess there might be a lot of cheap gear around soon!!!!!
kite community should have no reason to panic over the ammendments to water users through the martine authority and department of infrastructure.
This is about putting systems in place to ensure the general public are covered under our tort law system.
litigation could be a costly and reputations put on the line if a water user was found negilent in their duty of care.
keep an open dialogue and all groups will benefit.
In order to try & placate concerned Perth metro kiters before this thread also becomes entirely toxic, some clarity on the Sunday Times article.
WAKSA met with representatives from the Dept of Transport in late July to discuss a range of issues including potential changes to existing regulation(s); and safety issues (for example, the wearing of PFD’s more than 400m offshore). DoT has indicated that they are going to consult with the Association before any changes, might occur.
WAKSA is waiting to hear back from DoT as to ‘what’s next’ as part of that process. The bans and restrictions mentioned in the article were not part of the conversation with DoT, and as recently as this morning, we received confirmation that bans are not being considered by the Department.
As a preliminary and proactive step (and prior to the article), WAKSA has been in contact with a number of local government authorities already and will continue to advocate on behalf of members (and for the sport) on a council by council basis and will discuss relevant issues with the appropriate authorities. Decisions affecting kiting will not be made lightly or without consultation with WAKSA members.
In the interim, remember this: kiters are being watched. Individual kiter behaviour has the ability to negatively impact on our sport and our options about where we kite – use common sense; be safe; and keep an eye on what’s happening around you/us, both on & off the water.
The WAKSA crew.
