Hi Adam
just depends on your weight (and to a certain extent where you will kite) with regards to kite size. Everybody here has personal preferences on the gear they prefer. less than 90 kilos probably looking at 9/10M over 90 kilos probably a 11/12m will get you out most days. with regards to boards long and wide twin tip would be easiest to learn on Minimum (140 x 40 cm wide).
With kites if you are going to buy second hand don't buy anything more than 3 years old (so pre 2007) as the advances in safety/ re-launchability have really come on since 07. Really the best person to seek advice from is the person who's teaching you! Just remember don't get too small a kite, you'll only be able to use it when the wind is too strong for your skill level, and don't get too small a board, you wont be able to get up and planning, and will just get frustrated.
see u on the water!
