You are coming at the best time. It is normally very windy 18-23 knots+ every day in Perth.
There are many spots in Perth as well as North within a 1-10(!) hour drive.
A kitesurfing holiday starting in Perth then slowly moving North would be one way to go. A few quick points:
- roughly, the further North the windier it is.
- about 100 miles out of Perth there is big distances between sparsely populated areas.
- the scenery is spectacular but it is desert and is not everyone's idea of a holiday, i.e. there is not much else to do but swim/surf etc and look at the landscape.
You would have the kite surfing time of your life.
Another idea would be to go down South, say a 3 hour drive max to the Margaret River area. A few points:
- not as many spots due to the nature of the rocky coastline but there are a few.
- the spots are not for beginners.
- not as many kite surfers, some days it can be really windy and there will be no-one out!
- the area is truly beautiful with many attractions - wineries, food etc.
As to kite sizes, the best I can say is bring what you can do in the 18-25 knot range in. For Perth, the seabreeze comes in at 1/2 pm and then gradually builds up in strength. See my post www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=41353 for more details. Up North it will be stronger.
Sorry, can't advise on campervans as have never had to do it. However, there is this site for camper trailers crikeycamperhire.com.au/ They are friends of mine and I can vouch for their honesty. They may be able to refer you to a campervan hire place.
Good winds.
