Just saw some thoughts/queries regarding wind strengths at the pond in a C4 review, thought should post here rather than highjack so hopefully you guys see this post.

Ive just moved down this way and Im trying to get my head around actual wind strengths around the pond/secret harbour vs the garden island seabreeze readings.

Garden island has to be the best gauge for the area but sits a bit further offshore than where we kite. On Wednesday I kited Secret Harbour and looking at the readings at the time I reckon the actual wind strength was about 2-3knots less than the Garden Island reading..

Any locals down this way think this is an accurate estimate?.. or have better knowledge of the difference?

The garden island wind meter is on top of the causeway bridge. It sees a bit more wind then you will get on the ground. Also there is a bit of a funnelling effect through the channel.

You will get a bit of a thermal effect in the pond and at secrets which will reduce the strength compared with the wind readings you get at GI - they are pretty accurate, kite out the back of pengo's for comparison.

I'm not sure
I kite at Penguin Island most of the time, what I estimate the wind to be at the beach there always seems to be at least 5 knots more than what the Garden Island Meter reads

Interesting you say that d3. I kited the pond on Xmas eve afternoon and tacked up to penguin island at one stage. GI was reading around 20knots, maybe gusting to 22.. I thought it may have been actually a bit more than that.. Maybe more like 25, even at the pond, and at times thought I was at the top end of my 11m c4.

So perhaps this could be the case at pengoes and the pond but there was definitely a difference the other way (less) at secrets

The anemometer on the bridge is just used to monitor wind speed over the bridge for traffic safety.
The actual Bom weather station is located at the helo support facility.

Fair enough, that probably makes me completely wrong then!
