Hi Weta,

Good approach mate! There is a great little book called "priceless camping in WA". It lists most of the free or super cheap camping spots all over this great state. It costs about $28 and will save you that much coin in one nights accomodation at a free camp.

Quobba doesn't really offer much to my limited knowledge, but there is a great spot (which is not a secret spot) called Blowholes. As you approach the "T" intersection where the "King Waves Kill" sign is, turn left instead of right and drive to the campground. There is a beaut bay there with some waves (out the back) and flat water and nice sandy beach. Fun and safe kiting.

Camping fees are $5 per vehicle I think, which is payable to the ranger when he/she visits. There are long drop toilets and plenty of room for a tent.

I'll leave the locals to let you know about other spots south of Carnarvon. Have a great stop over!

LOL..

I hate camping in tents while kiteing wind and tents don't seem to agree for me. It seems its one or the other. So now its just a swag in the back of the ute..

Thanks Darren,
Blowholes was the spot i was thinking of checking out!

Free camping spots wasn't what was driving my stop off choice but they are a bonus i had just heard there was a spot south of Carnarvon not too far off the main drag. Where as the blowholes are a good 100km detour there and back to the main road, but if it's a good spot then its well worth it and i have the luxury of cruising up to Exmouth over a couple of days.

See you all in Exmouth for some Good Times!!!

Orientate your tent correctly and the Sou wester will cool it down in the arvo.....the sound of a good sou wester blowing over a tent is great to wake up to!!

I've stayed in carnarvon a few times now. If you want to stay in town there's a big 4 caravan and camping site. The kiting is at the jetty on the right hand side (nice bay and mini rolling waves to play on out the back)

There's also a beach if you keep driving past the jetty until you hit a boat ramp, you'll see the beach to your right.

In town make sure you stop in to morell's to get fresh fruit and veg......it's the best in WA!! It may sound exaggerated but I love it so much I get it brought down to perth or sent.

Check out www.kitemix.com/ and chat to Mick. There's a good crew in town that'll be happy to chat about where to go.

Have fun, last time i went there to kite I started 9am and finished at 6pm......

For cheap fresh fruit and Veg and more, check out Bumbaks, they do similar to Morells but also home made chutneys, preserves, Jams, ice cream and more and cheap!

Love the strawberry icy poles dipped in choc! Yum! I wanna go back now.

what kitehard said RE Quobba i was up there about a month ago, didnt have kite with me unfortunately but bay at blowholes looked unreal. left at the blowholes T junction cant miss it (note pretty sure they have taken down the king waves kill sign that kitehard referred to but signpost and quobba signage is there).

Lots of "retirees" with sweet camping rigs but didnt see any kites or any boards, saw some alright waves on the outer reef and a few breaking through the bay. Theres even "retirees" that obviously stay there for an extended time, as theres a caravan that does haircuts, one that puts photos onto DVD's via laptop, one selling muffins/cakes etc its like its own little town. cant wait to get up there with a kite myself. get invloved!

There is a couple of spots where you can camp and kite not to far off the main road 20-25k's or so south of Carnarvon, it's flatwater but is fairly tidal and was too shallow when I called in , maybe ok on a higher tide.

Bay at Blowholes sounds the ticket

Are there any Grey Nomads offering kiting lessons?????

A cup of tea with caravan baked muffins & cake after a kiting session sounds pretty good!!!
