Hey, I'm wondering if there are any beginners that go out in groups. Had lessons and doing "ok" with getting up,
Would feel safer if I went out with others in same position to keep an eye out.

FB groups?

Cheers

I am in the same boat as you. I dont think there are any newbie FB groups, but maybe we should start one - I am keen :)

Defiantly. Where do you usually head out. I have been advised to try a down wind sesh. Best way to learn.
I'm in the Scarborough area.

Cool! I am little bit behind you, I struggled to get up in on my switch side last session, but as soon as i get that happening more reliably iI'll be ready for dowinders! Cant wait for that. I'll start an FB group. If you message me your full FB name I can add you to the group, and hopefully we'll get a gang going. So far I have only kited solo twice, and only at Shoalwater, which is a good spot because if you get stuck you will eventually get blown back into the bay :)

If you're doing a downwinders there be aware of flags at Brighton and scarbs, I followed a learner yesterday who went straight through there 30m from shore. Spoke to him at south trigg, said he had no idea, completely oblivious.

Thanks, yep, I wouldn't kite anywhere until I had chatted to the local experts about the area first:)

Decided to carry my kite up the beach last time, rather than fly it - didnt wrap my lines properly - took me about 45 mins to untangle them at the other end - rookie mistake you only make once ;) It was a proper kite string tangle for sure.

I'll give you a tip
Don't try too long a run
Kite at 12
Dive the kite and stand up on the board
Kite back to 12 and sit back in the water
Repeat, repeat, repeat,
It gives a great feel and understanding of what's required power delivery wise on your water starts
I drum this into people on outward and inward tacks,
You, your kite spends more time above and on the water than in it,
When confident you add some meterage to your runs

Thanks heaps for the tip. I will i do that. Last time i kept dipping either too light or too hard for waterstarts to the right. Got ripped through the air many times, smashing the kite, then spending ages relaunching and body dragging , not much fun really

Im keen to go kiting with someone if youre interested. Last time i checked i was still working on my turning and toeside riding but i havent kited in months so i guess ill be on the same boat :p

Cool. I am keen for Friday :) Would that suite you? I was thinking Shoalwater near Pengos (?) From what I can gather that is the best spot for beginners? It does get very busy on the beach though, which stresses me out, especially when launching and walking the kite up . I guess I just need lots of practice to the right. My goal for next time is to keep the kite in the air and work on repeated water starts, without over diving it, crashing, body dragging, repeating. Better to dive too small than too big and crash. I seem to drink lots of water while body dragging and there is only so much seawater my tummy can handle . The wind is looking quite strong this weekend, I may end up being overpowered. Sigh,.... I have only just started and I am already in need of two more kites. .

A tip for what it's worth. I struggled for a long time to go to the right. I would dive the kite, get up and get going, but then just stall. The problem was my angle of attack was too aggressively aimed up wind. As soon as I took off pointing straight downwind and then arcing back upwind, things improved dramatically. Happy kiting

Be more afraid if there is no other kites on the beach! Penguin island is a known learn spot to practice cross shore tacking and anybody on that beach will be aware there are learners in the water and its there own fault if they get tommohawked while not paying attention (as long as you are doing your best to be safe and it was s genuine mistake lol!)

Also consider if it is to buisy for your liking and u have a mate or two as company going a bit further down wind towards peron, there is actually another sand bar that stretches out to.. Gull?? Island that me and my mates learnt on.

Thanks heaps mywisdom . I went out there today with a kite-buddy, and it was just right, there were enough kiters but not too many. I didnt die or crash my kite on anyone, and got some runs in each direction. I am super careful about avoiding other kiters after nearly taking someone out during a launch failure last weekend. Now I have serious launch anxiety though, its going to take a few session to recover from it. All the other kiters at Shoalwater were lovely, its a good spot :)
