Hi all,

I know most of you are probably wondering why the Ocean Reef meter is down. Here is some info I just received from the BOM:

As of Monday 13 October 2025, the Ocean Reef automatic weather station (AWS) (009214) was decommissioned. The station provided local wind observations for the Ocean Reef area. The Ocean Reef Marina development project requires the station to close. However, the Bureau is investigating a new AWS site that will include additional weather information such as temperature, rain and humidity.

Ah man, that really sucks. So much for progress, it's back to looking at the trees again.

Just wish the direction was in NESW rather than Degrees

I display all the available meters in the area on a single page here: www.kitebud.com.au/wind

Our Pinnaroo Point live meter is only installed during lessons but will provide much more accurate readings compared to the BOM Hillarys meter and the Tempest Hillarys meter since it's not as affected by wind shadows.

Welcome to our world!
BOM closed down the only accurate wind reporting station for coastal Mackay area awhile back, and when questioned they say that the airport is our official station. Where the wind is somewhat influenced by surrounding structures and nearby trees. Although not so badly as the one at Mackay harbour, which is so far different from real conditions, it's not even worth looking at!
Definitely it seems all progress around here is backwards.

Hi All, we just received a brand-new replacement meter station and we should be able to provide accurate readings during lesson days in the afternoons. www.kitebud.com.au/wind
