As summer is slowly fading away:

What's a great winter trip from Melbourne in summer ?

Criteria: warm weather/ not excessively expensive / awesome kite flat+waves

Aitutaki - Cook Islands, limited wave action, plenty of flats though

When does Aitutaki - Cook Islands, go off, wind wise? I had a mate that went and it barely went over 14knots. Thanks.

No guarantees, its like snowboarding theres a chance when you get to the mountain it wont snow same with kiting theres a higher than avergage chance that it will be windy on most days of your trip, I've been there and kited on a 8m for 18 days straight but thats not the norm.

The trades blow in a cycle of about 5 days on, 2-3 days off. The wind will build over those five days from 12-15, peak around 22 and then drop back off. Then there will be a couple of days where its 12 and less and then cycle repeats its self.

But the are variables where the highs and lows just don't sit in the right places and if your lucky the winds blow for many more days or if you are unlucky its 4 or five days with out wind.

Ive had nearly 60 days in total over there and i would have

easily kited 45 of those on 8m to 16M kites

Mate, keep the $$ in Aus, and come to Townsville or Cairns. Plenty of flat water and wind up here. Very warm too, both in and out of the water. And then you can swig a cold one by the pubs near by. Can't ask for anything more really.

Not sure if Aitutaki is cheap? Cocos Islands aren't too bad but the extra flight to the islands are ex'y.

Hard to compare the two, even thought they are both tropical islands with trade winds they are so different.
alcohol is cheaper on cocos
food and eating out cheaper on Aitutaki
transport (mopeds) cheaper on Aitutaki
no boats/transfers needed on cocos
accommodation cheaper on Aitutaki
no wind activities cheaper on cocos
cheaper to fly melb to Aitutaki than melb to cocos

so many variables when considering an comparing costs of an overseas trip, hard to go wrong with either destination though

Oh man. The only thing I think about when you mention Townsvillle and Cairns:

Not counting the jellyfish.

What are the extra precautions you guys take up there?

How about Hawaii? Anyone been? Tickets are cheaper than exotic islands.

Kailua on Oahu. One of the worlds best beaches, friendly group of kiters and warm waters. Can get airfare for 900 return with jet star, accom for 40 per night. Usually kite 3 or 4 days out of 7. 12m to 17m. Or you can hit Maui for an additional 200 flight and kite every day in 28kn winds at Kite beach. Accom is cheap in Kahalui.

Yeah you're right. Too crowded anyway. Nah, go some place else.
