I got approached by one of the council lifeguards today about exiting at Dicky Beach, which I've been doing for over a year without incident. He said they've had some issues with kiters stacking it in front of the flags and having their kites come over swimmers (wtf??). As such they asked if I could spread the word that from South of the reef at Anne St to the next southern reef is out of bounds as a bathing reserve. If you are transiting the area they want you to go out 200m, so more or less out to the shoal offshore.
They are happy for people getting out at Dicky to get out next to the southern rocks at Beerwah Parade but not to root around. Pretty miffed about this myself but if muppets are gunna stack it in the flags then it's to be expected I guess. This is a real handy spot to get out as the bus stop is only about 50m up the road, so please don't push our collective luck in here and get them to push us up to Anne street which is a much longer walk.
Their safety concerns are spot on, this is one of the busiest sections between Buddina and Caloundra and if we take someone out it won't look good. Add in to that it is probably the ****test wave section along the whole coast, there is no reason to be playing in there. Get your last waves on the Anne St reef, tack out to the shoal, tack in to the Southern reef, pack up and get out.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I come from Brisbane from time to time and this is a favorite spot to kite.
Such a shame. Kited Currimundi a few weeks ago. Talked to dicky beach lifeguards (they drove up to say hi). All was cool. Then some numbnuts, not sure if they were local, came through on a downwinder went right through the flagged area at dicky beach. What about the rules of 200m off shore and at least 50m either side of a flagged swimming area do people not understand? Why ruin it for other kiters like Dl33ta, the sunshine, and brisbane crews.
Do the gang at kitethrills know anything about this?
Kerry
Nice info.
Can we get a big red zone on the whereto map at the top of the QLD section? - I for one check this map when i go somewhere new in the SE.
Sorry for asking "twice" but you're saying flat water goofy waves at Ann st, on northerlies are completely out ?
If this is the case, then are they any good at Beerwah Parade on the same day?
thanks in advance

It's rock to rock, I would take that to mean you are right up to the southern side of the rocks south of Anne St down the the north side of the rocks at Beerwah Pde.
Yep, a mate and I on Friday were playing around from Dicky reef to the flags, on kites, in the predicted strong Southerlies, but rain squalls producing lulls had us struggling to stay upwind and some admitted drifting north towards the flagged area. A few windsurfers were out as well and my mate actually ended up beyond (north of) the flagged area, requiring a walk of shame back to Dicky reef walking with kite in the air through the flagged area (something I have done many times down at Narrowneck, though not actually kited through)...anyway a lifeguard patrol car then approached us on the beach, he was not unpleasant and proceeded to tell us the same information mentioned earlier, that Dicky reef to the "wreck" to the north of the flagged area is a bathing reserve and not for kiting but poleys were okay but expecting them too, to remain well away from the flagged area!
The patrol fellow also advised they requested downwinders to both commence and conclude no further south of the "wreck", which is just north of the flagged area.
With respect Ann Street reef/rocks, geographically these recommendations do indeed allow some play area south of Ann Street, so Ann Street is fair game to kite.
The Narrowneck boys love their patch and enforce quite strict adherence to kiting only between the flagged areas and to not disturb the actual lifeguarded flagged areas themselves...a lesson for us all there.
Sunshine Coast downwinders are a real privilege and I would endorse earlier comments for kiters to avoid the flagged areas so these activities can continue.
