Wow. I never knew what tropical winds were like until I realised how consistent they can be, compared with gusty conditions around Port Phillip bay, Victoria. Most trade winds in Northern QLD (North of Bowen in my view), are traditionally SE through to NE (source: BOM rose window data). And they are hardly above 30knots, but anything from 15knots up.

However, so far this year we're getting the "monsoon winds" from the North, due to the Temperal Equator traditionally shifting South this time of year. I have not personally kited in these winds before, but wow, they are nice!

I had a great session yesterday around Townsville, and the winds cleaned up everything in terms of flat water, consistancy and hence made it easy for the ability to tack between Magnetic Island and back to the mainland. But what surprised me where the BOM forecasts and readings. They were totally underestimated, and that's probably more to do with the location of the monitors "expecting" winds from the Eastern vicinity. I had easily over 18knots yet BOM read around 13 knots. This was also why it was sweet, as most local kiters did something else yesterday, but i went with my gut and had the bay practically to myself and other die hard locals that appreciated the conditions.

Here's to Summer Kiting in Northern QLD!

LOL.. Unlikely since kiting is above water, not under it!
