Was chatting to a guy from the Surf Life Savers Club at Maroochydore a few days ago and he mentioned from where the beach access track is at cotton tree, to the flagged area south of the access track is a bathing zone, and kiting is not allowed in this area. He wasn't having a go, yet wanted to get his point accross. A sign has recently gone up at the start of the track.
In a northerly, it's really easy to end up in this area if your kiting in the surf near the river mouth when the wind is light, or if you drop your kite and can't re-launch.
Said I'd post this on here to help the Surf Life Saving Club get the messge out.
lol yeah pity there understanding of kiting is based on the good old days when there was alot more danger involved, and yeah funny how it's fine for surf boards sup and wave ski's. Maybe after Rio games things will change then again Australia is good for shuting things down that are still fun and free and not just where you can kite, but also fishing 4wd trail bike riding, too many busy body goodie two shoes wanting to save or control the world
A specific zone was made during the SURF LIFE Saving comps at the end of last season for the duration of the competition due to the sand erosion further south.
I talked with the president on the beach a few months back - he was moaning about Kiting as well - Basically very idealistic volunteer IRB crews going in to rescue people in the wave zone getting into trouble DOOOH[}:)] - better risk management training required IMO.
This is one of the reasons why the taking over of the Council run Life Guard service by SLSQ is a bad idea - another remote organisation with a hand in we control your life pie![]()
- (apart from down graded service - that SLSQ organisation as it stands does not employ many life guards....16 I think the paper said).
The swim outside the flags is being actively promoted by a surf club??? I know when I was involved this was not the case and although likely to be supported by the police they are still citizens - normally every day blokes enjoying the beach not - council law enforcers.
When the wind is blowing 15 + knots (= kite time) it is not much of a swim / beach zone.
I could agree with a seasonal promotion so during defined peak holiday times till say 3:00 pm - but written in cement all year - too many people employed at the council making work..
Anyway, the effective control of the beach zone was defined at Wellington point...
The activity is below the mean high tide = not a council zone to legislate ATMoment.
For that matter U could probably challenge/ignore a dog off the lead fine in the tide zone.. [}:)]
Cheers
