What size kite would you guys recommend for a roughly 65kg beginner around Brisbane and the Gold Coast? I was thinking around 10 to 12m? Is that reasonable for the wind conditions etc around here?

I took lessons in Thailand a few months ago and I was using 12-15m kites over there but it seems like the wind gets a fair bit stronger over here.

To give you an idea of where I'm at - I was starting to go upwind on the board when I left Thailand but I definitely still have heaps to learn. If you guys have any tips I'd love to hear them.

Thank you guys!

From personal experience i would recommend a 12m Hybrid as it has a very wide wind range and can be a lot more forgiving than a C/ Bow kite especially for beginners like you; not only that but for your weight it will suit the local conditions along the SEQ coast. Hybrids are designed to perform in all conditions and are very easy for beginners to progress on.

There’s guys out there with more experience than me but here’s my recommendations for what their worth.

I’m 72kg and my most used kites are 9 and 12 hybrid types, so at 65kg I think you would use a 10 more often a 12 especially around SEQ.

Without knowing exactly what knots you were kiting in on your Thailand trip I can only guess they were around 11 – 15 as I have been there twice and both times that was about the average, hence why they had you on a 12 -15 also the wind feels less dense over there.

Do a bit of research on a few preferences then drop into a couple of your local kite shops and ask them what they reckon…

Just realised I made a typo, it should be; I’m 72kg and my most used kites are 9 and 11 hybrid types,

Im 65-70kg and used to ride a 10m regularly, now I am more skilled and like being more powered I much prefer my 12m.

Do yourself a favour and drive down to the sunny Coast and see Jarrett from Sunshine Coast sup and kite fun, at cotton tree. He will sort you out, I recommend a Best Ts 12m. Awsome kite and you will progress fast.

At your weight probably 11m in most kites will be suitable.
Drop in to Briskites and I am happy to discuss with you.
