Hello All,
My friend and I will be travelling from Canada to the gold coast from january to march and we're looking to find out where the best kiting locations are. A website I found shows quite a few locations right by Biggera Waters (where we will be staying)...
I've heard wavebreak island is decent and it looks like you can get out into the surf from there...what are the wind conditions like here and how big are the waves? We mostly kite on lakes here with a little bit of ocean kiting in mexico so not much experience in the surf.
Is the surf manageable for intermediate kiters with minimal ocean experience? Any tips or advice for kiting in this area?
Thanks,
Ryan
Hey Ryan that is a convenient location to live as you are in the middle of 2 well known kite spots: Shearwater Esplanade to your Nth (well past wavebreak island) and Loders Creek beach (just behind KFC) south of you. Both are about 5 mins drive way and depending on the conditions we often will do downwinders from one end to the other. As you can see using google earth there are a lot of little sand bank islands all the way along in between.
You can also kite off the beach at Biggera Waters however the beach is very narrow on high tide and you need to be an experienced kiters with a good plan B in case you need to land your kite by yourself as the road with trees and power lines is only 10-15 metres from the end of the sand area... The area is also very tidal as it's very narrow piece of water so very important to know the tide direction if you want to launch from Biggera Waters and get up wind (Northerly) to wave break and kite island (small horse shoe sand bank up wind of wave break island). There is a small beach where you can take off to get to wavebreak area which is upwind of it (on a Nth wind) but you will need to walk over the bridge and around a couple big buildings to get there Oatlands Ave is the street to walk down.
And by the way you can't get to the ocean from this area unless you are willing to drop your kite on Sth Stradebroke island deflat it walk through the bush 10-15mins to get to the other side and re inflate on the ocean side! The seaway that leads to the ocean is too dangerous and narrow to kite through as you will lose the wind in there and be affected by monster currents as the whole of the back water area rushes out to the ocean thru here this is an absolute NO NO!
This means you will need to drive (if you don't have a small boat) around to Surfers Paradise (15mins) to get to the ocean beaches which there are numerous only thing to remember here is to NOT kite near any flagged areas as these are designated for swimming and are patrolled by life guards you have plenty of room between the flagged areas so stay in there and be careful around other swimmers or surfers in the water and on the beach as it can get pretty busy - people loving walking the beach in Australia...
I also used to live in Biggera Waters (learnt to kite in all the places mentioned) but now live in Hong Kong I will be back last to weeks of Dec for Xmas for my annual break don't have a TT at home anymore leave it here in HK so might be out on a surfboard or skimboard if at all as I prefer to drive around to the ocean. Maybe able to borrow a TT when i'm back though so fingers crossed for some good wind and a relaxing Xmas.... hope you get some good winds and BTW winds are mostly SE that time of the year!
