Discovering kite spots in the Gulf of Carpentaria
Hi I am working on a trawler in the gulf, when it blows we go and hide behind an island for a phew days. I'm hunting out good kite locations ad there is almost permanently good wind up here. I wanted to start this thread in the hope that anyone else who knows any good kite locations here can share them
I discovered 2 knew kiting spots today just you can't do a down winder from one to the other because there is a crock living between them!
Wind up here is 15-25 knots from around 9am to 2 pm every day like clockwork for a solid 6 months of the year meaning you will always have perfect wind; just it is very difficult finding an onshore wind. Therefore many of these spots will require shallow water or a boat launch.
The first spot is on a large mud flat inside a river, it's about 85% sand and 15% mud but is rather wide with good wind in the north western end. Water is knee deep if you go at the right tide time, just don't go too far down wind as there is a 3m crock living at the mouth of the river (about 1.5km) best time to go is when the tide is 1.8m at Mornington island the water will be about one foot deep in the entire area smooth flat water, high winds soft bottom for big jumps.
The second spot is at the mouth of the river. The river comes out and then runs along the beach to the north east in a channel. Kite on the western side of the river well away from the river mouth as the same crock lives just inside the mouth of the river. The bottom is like gravel but made our of coral so some shoes or something is a must but apart from that supper constant wind once you get a phew hundred meters away from the trees and knee deep to shallow clear water.
thanks for any coments or spots that you are willing to share also i have all of the gos data stored on map dorce if anyone wants it, im going to atempt to do some speed runs in the shallow smooth water
G'day,
We used to go fishing at Sweers Island every 2nd winter, there was always plenty of steady wind there too.
You are a brave man ![]()
