I haven't come across any race events on this forum yet, i could just be blind, but if there isn't any... why not? surely there would be enough interest.
I've noticed things like this sail club series in Melbourne... looks great! i'm only a beginner, but i think something like this would also create more interest in the sport as well as being good for kite shop's hip pockets. Who knows we might even have an Olympic star among us here in QLD! oh and it would just be fun!
Sorry if this has been discussed already!
Ok so i've come across something saying there's a Brisbane Summer series. so... sorry! but i still don't see any actual details. it can't be advertised very well.
It isnt SE qld,but Great Keppel Island to the yeppoon up north. Havn't done the race myself, but last time i was up that way it wasnt flat water the whole way between GKI and mainland. ![]()

Keen to get involved in some racing/hook up with some local kite racers in goldy/brizzy.
Had an amazing session on my cab 183 race board 2013 ozone edge 17m yesterday in 8-14 knots
Where you based? There are about 6 of us into racing at Brighton (Brisbane) and we often have friendly race days during the season…. P.M me your details and I'll add you on my text list when we do.![]()
yeah so if there actually is nothing (or not much), i'd say that's a bit lame by us queenslanders. I would have thought it would also be in a kite shop's interest to organise events like that. Maybe we need a sailing club on board?
I'm in too. Race board arriving shortly, so I'm a complete beginner to racing, but hoping to get out and practice my tacks/gybes etc. Been kiting 10 years and some sailboat racing before that.
I'm with Odkite, why no series? I heard that Padi was supposed to be running one last year (see his web site) but every race got cancelled.
Someone wanna approach humpybong yacht club to see if they will put on a formal series?
My budget is pretty low, and there's not really much anything on the 2nd hand market. I put a deposit on a new 2011 cabrinha board, the 183cm. Very cheap for a new board.
Like this one.http://www.kiteaddiction.com.au/gear/archive/2011/boards/cabrinha?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=431&category_id=55
I'm sure it's not competitive but it's enough for me to have a decent try, and if I enjoy the race board then I can upgrade in another year or so.
I asked the same thing at the RQYC a couple of weeks ago.
They said that if 5 competitors could be guaranteed they would run any class of sail.
I have approached a couple of clubs in Brissy, the biggest issue is the even if you are a member of AKSA , you are not yet recognized by yachting Australia to be allowed to race at a yacht club. To race at a yacht club you need a silver card , because ISAF has chosen kite racing in the Olympics and has recognized kite boarding as an international yachting class it is only a matter of time before we get recognition from yachting Australia ,(I believe this process is underway)
So we have 2 options at the moment
1/ is for us Brisbane Kite Club or say Paddi or whoever to run a AKSA sanctioned ( or I think Paddi runs through IKO ?) to run sanctioned race series/event ( this covers the insurance requirements...whether it be AKSA or IKO) , this requires a heap of organizing , start boats , rescue boats , race committee ect ect ,:( then a storm rolls in or the wind doesn't blow and all the organization goes down the drain.
2/ join local yacht club to get silver card and race in the boat fleet these guys have all the gear , all the rescue /start boats ,marks ect , if we can get enough numbers they will put on a separate start /division ...( down the track even if we get the silver card through AKSA , those planing on racing more than a couple of days at a particular club will be very strongly urged to join that yacht club , as they will only let you race there so many times before asking you to become a member or tell you to bugger off.
Good thing about this set up is these guys race set days , the volunteers are already there in most cases , you turn up , do your races , go back to the club give them a hand getting the committe boats out ,hit the bar for a burger and a beer and catch up with the crew , then you go home....
Racers are welcome at Brighton , most kiteable days there will be guys out on race boards ,we have been known to have the occasional /unofficial /unsanctioned fun race around some marks that somehow just appear out in the bay??,so come on down and bring your race gear. The more intrest the better , and if I can go to the local yacht club and tell them we got 20 keen starters they will be all over us![]()
Brisbane Kite Club will be organizing some racing soon ( we are negotiating the above ) and seeing athough we are AKSA affiliated we have to play by their rules,,, so keep you eye on our Facebook page and the events page here as this is where we will be posting any notices of race or upcoming events or ride days.
Btw .. Any one wanting to compete in any BKC or AKSA event any where in Australia ( whether it be racing or freestyle ect) needs to be a member of AKSA or one of it's affiliated clubs .see Aksa website for details.

I am happy to give this a go as well, albeit I haven't been kiting all that long but come from a strong dinghy sailing background and am an ex member of RQ.
Has anyone checked out the threads from the Sailboarders as they were looking into getting some regular racing together out of Darling Point. Not sure where they are at with it.
It seems to make more sense if someone is going to approach clubs that we try and help each other out.
Would have to do seperate starts to ensure safety and fair racing for all.
Sounds great Rattlehead! i'll have to look into getting a race board some time this season.
The yacht club set-up would be great! i'm sure if it was made well known, there would be plenty of interest to get the numbers that allow for a series!
I spoke with humpybong and they are keen, they have fortnightly races and race a lot of small classes, they welcome new members. We just need to be prepared to pay and be a part of the club, and be involved etc.. In four years one of us will be heading to RIO!
Anyone keen to have some un official races on Saturday down at Brighton or Sandgate?
The forecast looks good. If we have enough people I will try and get some more markers put out.
Had a great day on Sunday racing against FlyingMark ;) awesome fun!!
Anyone intersted in racing in Brisbane or SE Qld shoot me a PM with your contact details . I'm putting together a mailing list and planning a meeting/discussion on which way people want to go .There are 2 yacht club options in the area both have positives and negatives .
