Tested these line cutters the other day. They had never been used, have been stored dormant in their little harness sleeve covered in residual sand and salt for over 4 years.
Commeth the moment, commeth the cutters. They sliced through all 4 lines like a hot knife through butter.
That is all.
I mentioned it in another post a week or so ago.
Went out in the storm that passed through NSW a week or 2 ago. I went out at Curl Curl in the morning, very onshore and strapless and leashless so couldn't get behind the break but had a good play. Afternoon comes, I figure i might try Manly (north Steyne). There was a massive lull in the wind 150mtrs out, right where you need wind most. I got spanked once, my kite (8m) took a dip and i got dragged a bit. I managed to relaunch, get back on the board for another go.
Same spot, same lull, with a big wave coming so decide to gybe early. As the kite loads up through the window a leading edge line snaps (it turns out the line slipped over little monkey fist). Kite starts looping, I go body dragging, that big wave hits me and I'm rolling.
So I hit the ejector button, but a few lines are caught around my harness... Kite hits the rain drain pipe, goes over it (yes, ripped) I get dragged under the pipe. Strong rip, waves crashing all around. Tried hanging on the pipe so give me time to get my line cutter out. Cut my way out of trouble...
Spent another half hour trying to get my bar back (ended up putting surf boots on and walking the pipe; bar was stuck at the end, cut it free)...
Kite is repaired now, but I just ordered a new set of lines. Not cheap! 8 years and never had to cut a line. But I'm glad I had those cutters on me...
TL DR: always have a line cutter on you.

So glad i had the cutter otherwise would have had to wave goodbye to the bar as well as the kite. You have to think in the spur of the moment. My desicion was to cut away the kite (LE blown and torn LE) and save the bar, kite was on its last legs and not worth saving. Had to swim in from offshore reef at sundown in cross off winds. To save all the lines i would have had to swim to the kite in good sized waves, not justified.
Bottom line, cutter was there when the moment called for it, cut one line at a time and DONT drop the cutter.

was quite fortunate to be wearing one though as i dropped my kite at sundown and popped the LE, lucky i had the leash as i was en route to hells and had to cut the kite free and save the bar.....would have been much worse to lose kite and board. Keep that pocket knife in the harness you never know when you may need it.....first time in 4years still sharp.
