Hey Clint,

Start with a twin tip so you dont have to ride toe side straight away. You can just ride switch in one direction which is easier than it might sound.

For an ideal beginner board you want something with a little more surface area than what the other guys are riding. This helps you get up & planing easier, go up wind easier...the things you want when learning.

At 80kg's would look at a twin tip length of around 135 and a width probably no less than 40. Again ideally you would prob want a freeride type board which has softer flex opposed to the stiff freestyle boards. Do a little research online (or chat to retailer) & you'll soon find what models for each brand lean to this type of board to start on.

All this info is for an ideal learning board but not entirely necessary.

Once you have the twinnie down pat, get your surfboard out!!

I would say 138x42 or so. you will learn quick, go upwind easy and get heaps of use out of it. It will always be good as lighter wind board later on
