Mentioned that I rode this kite back to back with the Revolver in the other thread.
Rode this kite first when the wind was a bit better (but tide assist was less), managed to get some 2M high transitions, and get a feel for the way the kite will behave when powered. Got one good jump 4-5 M high when a bigger gust came through, really accelerates you off the water quickly, nice!
I really like the kite, it flies faster than the 07, it has a much thinner leading edge, and I reckon it turns faster too, but with a more stable feel. You can ride this kite fast as you want, or chugg along and cruise upwind in stronger winds looking for gusts to jump into.
Construction wise the kite is one of the better on the market, it is made in the same style as the Slingys, Cabs and the Flexi and Ozones, so it has full double sailcloth around all struts, leading edge and trailing edge. This gives a stronger, longer lasting, easier to repair if ripped, kite. All kites should be made this way IMO.
I found this years kite easy to self launch and self land, it was easier to relaunch than the 07, but still needs the "hold the front lines while pulling one rear" technique (no problem at all to relaunch though).
The kite reminded me very much of the Slingy Rev, but it is a bit quicker/less grunty, and I was flying it on a 45cm bar. All our kites came with the 07 bar, the 08 bar was not ready, but our kites will sell for a bit less because of that.
All our kites came with no EZ pump, there are only 5 struts. I did notice that the LE needs to be pumped to at least 9 PSI, otherwise I think performance and relaunch will suffer.
I was able to point really high upwind, Revolver was slightly better and slightly gruntier, but I think the Waroo might have a better top end. Handled the gusts well, had plenty of power when I downlooped it in a couple of transitions, so even though it turns tight, it still has some power there, which is good IMO.
Revolver had more stability when the lines went slack, the Waroo had a stronger tendency to fall and begin to luff. (nothing negative though)
Don't like the bag, but it is OK, a lot of work went into the design but the 9M is way too small. The 11M and bigger size is good but the design looks like a cover for R2D2, the top of the bag is velcroed on one side and if you pick up the bag by the top, it just rips off. Concerned about it coming off when travelling, would suggest getting it sewn through the velcro.
Its a progression on the already proven and popular Waroo design, although the canopy shape does look completely different, and the front line bridle is unique too, with 3 single pulleys on each side. Strangely the kite does not have a strong pulley feel, probably because the rear lines, which you notice pullys one more, have no pulleys. The pulleys appear to be rigged in a way so that the canopy can tilt and depower easily, but also so they trasmit turning forces without much movement.
I wish Best could mark the rear line leaders to indicate which knots to use, I ended up guessing from experience that the 3rd knot from the kite would be about right for me and the conditions, but I would have preferred the 2nd knot.
Would prefer to see fully kook proofed lines and leaders on the kite, it would still be possible to connect a front line to a rear leader on the kite the way it was supplied. Its easy to fix though, with a pack of Cab pigtails, or make your own.
I will be changing them to fully kook proof for our demo kite, mainly because I believe in the safety of that system and the only time I have ever connected my lines wrong was on a non kook proofed kite (does that say something about me??)
Its so easy to get distracted when connecting and someone asks you a question, nice girl walks by, etc ![]()
Looking forward to several more rides on this kite!!
2008 is the year of quality, stable and lower prices and performance from many brands!!
